In this week’s Thompson Okanagan tourism news summary, learn about wildfire preparedness and recovery, the announcement of Ellen Walker-Matthews as TOTA’s CEO, go2HR’s B.C. Labour Market Survey, funds for the Indigenous tourism businesses, and the latest research.
All of us in the Thompson Okanagan and the Province of British Columbia want to give a major shout out to the amazing work and bravery of our wildfire crews, working day in and day out for weeks to battle fires.
These individuals, on the ground and in the air, are working in extreme conditions of heat, smoke, and difficult terrain in order to keep our communities, businesses, residents, and visitors safe.
If you are near a wildfire area, please stay informed about the changing conditions and stay out of the way of those teams working on the ground or in the air.
For regional updates and resources, go to the ThompsonOkanagan.com - Know Before you Go page, which is updated on an ongoing basis.
We know this is a challenging time for many tourism businesses who have just entered Step 3 of the B.C. Restart Plan and in need of a busy season to recover.
We invite Thompson Okanagan tourism businesses to register in TOTA's Emergency Contact Database and also to share your current experiences so we can inform government of the evolving situation, such as:
Are you receiving cancellations that are due to concerns (real or perceived) with the wildfire situation?
Are your customers expressing concern about their plans and whether or not to continue their vacation?
Are your customers proceeding regardless of the wildfires and smoke, but changing their itinerary as the situation evolves?
Are you facing any other crisis related challenges?
Feel free to email Recovery@TOTABC.com with any information on the following questions and other concerns.

Welcoming Visitors From Across Canada: Air Canada's New Service Between Montreal and Kelowna Celebrated at Kelowna International Airport
TOTA is excited to welcome visitors through Air Canada’s newest non-stop domestic route between Kelowna International Airport (YLW) and Montréal-Trudeau Airport (YUL), celebrated this week at YLW. With this addition, the Thompson Okanagan is now directly connected through YLW to the following Canadian cities: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Victoria, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton, Kitchener/Waterloo, Whitehorse, and more.
TOTA is excited to announce Air Canada’s newest non-stop domestic route between Kelowna International Airport (YLW) and Montréal-Trudeau Airport (YUL), celebrated yesterday at YLW. Starting with three flights weekly, the schedule will increase up to five weekly flights by mid-August. The addition of this route into the Thompson Okanagan is just in time for Canadians to begin traveling nationally, connecting one end of Canada to the other.
Passengers of this route will fly on Air Canada's fuel-efficient Airbus A220-300 fleet, featuring 12 Business Class seats, 125 Economy class seats (the widest ones in the fleet), a modernized in-flight entertainment system, and Wi-fi.
“Our new flights onboard Air Canada's ultra-quiet and environmentally-friendly Airbus A220-300 are also conveniently timed with connections to Atlantic Canada and abroad through our Montreal hub. As the country reopens, we are pleased to help friends and family reunite, and support Canada's economic recovery and tourism industry,” said Mark Galardo, Senior Vice President, Network Planning and Revenue Management at Air Canada.
These flights will not only connect the Thompson Okanagan to guests from Quebec but also connects the region to Air Canada's vast global network with just one stop. With the addition of Montreal, the Thompson Okanagan is now directly connected through YLW to all four of Air Canada’s hub cities: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary. YLW offers flights through other airlines to Victoria, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton, Kitchener/Waterloo, and Whitehorse.
"We are thrilled to see this new direct flight from Montreal into Kelowna opening up tremendous possibilities for domestic travel in the Thompson Okanagan Region," said Ellen Walker-Matthews, Acting President and CEO of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, as she referenced the recently increased demand from Travel Trade and Travel Media in Quebec. "We have been seeing increased interest in our region from this part of Canada for some time now and this flight will be critical to help support that demand.”
This opportunity was made possible through the ongoing strong partnership between Air Canada, YLW, and YUL along with TOTA, Big White Ski Resort, the City of Kelowna, Tourism Kelowna, Okanagan Bucketlist, and the Kelowna and Vernon Chambers of Commerce.

Respectfully Acknowledging National Indigenous Peoples Day
Learn about National Indigenous Peoples Day, as well as Indigenous tourism initiatives in Canada, BC, and the Thompson Okanagan region. Since 2016, TOTA and Indigenous Tourism British Columbia have jointly employed a Regional Indigenous Tourism Specialist based in the Thompson Okanagan to develop and implement a cultural tourism strategy in alignment with TOTA and ITBC's corporate strategies. TOTA’s Indigenous projects include the 2019 International Indigenous Tourism Conference, the IArT Mobile Gallery, the Thompson Okanagan Regional Pledge, "Seven Affirmations for Seven Generations," and a 2020 tourism resiliency video.
In 1996, Canada declared June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day, a date which coincides with the summer solstice and the beginning of a season of berry picking, fishing, powwows, and gatherings for Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
Indigenous Tourism BC and Hon. Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport in BC, have shared a simple call to action to support Indigenous businesses and self-determination by exploring Indigenous Experiences Open in 2021.
Businesses and individuals can share photos with hashtag #IndigenousBC to stand behind the success of Indigenous peoples, families, and communities.
Also today, the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) announced the launch of a new campaign, The Original Original, which aims to educate travellers, modernize perceptions of Indigenous experiences, and rebuild the industry, which was disproportionately devastated by the pandemic.
Indigenous Tourism in the Thompson Okanagan
We acknowledge that the Thompson Okanagan region lies on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territory of three Interior Salish nations: the Syilx, Nlaka'pamux, and Secwépemc Peoples.
In 2016, the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) and Indigenous Tourism British Columbia embarked on a new and innovative program to assist Indigenous communities in the Thompson Okanagan with tourism development. Working collaboratively, the two organizations jointly hired a Regional Indigenous Tourism Specialist based in the Thompson Okanagan, to develop and implement a cultural tourism strategy in alignment with TOTA and ITBC's corporate strategies.
TOTA’s Indigenous projects include:
In 2019, the International Indigenous Tourism Conference hosted nearly 800 delegates in Kelowna through a partnership with TOTA, Indigenous Tourism of British Columbia (ITBC), Tourism Kelowna, Westbank First Nation, Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, Shackan Indian Band, and Lower Nicola Indian Band.
This summer, the IArT Mobile Gallery will house a digital art exhibit curated by Tania Willard of UBCO's Indigenous Art Intensive program. This authentic art experience brings Indigenous art from artists across Canada to the forefront of the Thompson Okanagan tourism experience.
The Thompson Okanagan Regional Pledge, "Seven Affirmations for Seven Generations," was created to share guidelines for sustainable tourism. The Pledge is based on the Indigenous Seven Generations Principle, which recognizes that decisions today have an impact for seven generations to come. Therefore, it is always our responsibility to consider the far-reaching and long term implications of our actions.
In this time of uncertainty, change, and growth, the Seven Affirmations for Seven Generations Pledge is more relevant than ever for the tourism industry. The affirmations provide a thoughtful way forward on a difficult journey. Watch the video released in 2020 to learn more.
TOTA continues to work to cultivate credible relations with the 33 Indigenous communities throughout the Interior and endeavours to develop economic opportunities that progress Indigenous Tourism within the region, whilst maintaining respect and cultural authenticity.

Closing the Gap Between Many Young Job-Seekers and Recruitment Challenges for Tourism & Hospitality Businesses
According to a recent news article, many young Canadians are struggling to find summer employment, having lost more than 100,000 jobs in the month of April. Meanwhile, many employers within the tourism and hospitality industry are actively recruiting and at the same time finding it challenging to fill open positions.
According to a recent news article, many young Canadians are struggling to find summer employment, having lost more than 100,000 jobs in the month of April. Ongoing uncertainty, especially prior to the announcement of BC's Restart Plan, was and continues to be felt by both job-seekers and employers alike. The May 2021 federal Labour Force Survey showed a loss of 68,000 jobs, most of which were part-time, and though the unemployment rate for B.C. remains below the national average, it remains high for young people between 15 to 24.
Meanwhile, many employers within the tourism and hospitality industry are actively recruiting and at the same time finding it challenging to fill open positions. The pandemic has posed countless challenges and greatly affected the recruitment process, including the ability to hire international workers and reach young people through job fairs.
This is a gap we all need to work together to fix to help ensure our Tourism Industry can rebound and that those who are seeking employment opportunities know how and where to connect with our tourism stakeholders.
If you are looking to attract and/or retain employees during this season, tourism employers can take advantage of an abundance of resources offered by go2HR, including a virtual job board, and one of many recent webinars with practical tips on adjusting recruitment practices.

After over two months of instruction, mentorship, employment coaching, and job placement support, we are extremely proud of the hard work, passion, and dedication of our 46 successful graduates.
Throughout the program, we came to discover that many of our students had recently lost jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic and were in search of next steps, resources, and connection. Within a virtual setting allowing for a large group of participants from all corners of the region, students learned about Tourism and Hospitality trends, regional experiences, and the delivery of day-to-day guest service, including an overview of Indigenous tourism, accessible tourism, and sustainable tourism from a diverse roster of tourism experts. A virtual job fair held last month introduced program participants to the Thompson Okanagan Tourism industry and 20 potential employers.
The training program was offered to participants free of charge, in cooperation with the University of Victoria-Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, and supported by the Province of British Columbia, in response to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and decline of international tourism.
We would like to express a heartfelt 'thank you' to all those who have supported this program - mentors, facilitators, partners, and members of our staff whose passion and commitment made it all possible.
Congratulations to our graduates, we wish you all the best and trust you will be successful in all your future endeavours.

Supporting Our Industry: Registration Now Open for the BC Hospitality Foundation #HospitalityHustle
It is tremendous to see so many organizations working to create virtual events and activities. Registration is now open for the #HospitalityHustle, presented by Odlum Brown, in support of the important work the BC Hospitality Foundation continues to do for our industry.
It is tremendous to see so many organizations working to create virtual events and activities while restrictions are still in place preventing traditional events and fundraising activities from taking place.
One new initiative, raising funds for the BC Hospitality Foundation is the #HospitalityHustle, presented by Odlum Brown Limited.
The BC Hospitality Foundation has long been in place to provide financial assistance to industry employees when they are facing a crisis due to health-related challenges not covered under benefits. They also offer scholarship programs to support students enrolled in hospitality-related training in BC to help foster the development of our future tourism leaders.
Right now they need our help and support to ensure they have the funds to continue to do the tremendous work they do. Registration is now open for the #HospitalityHustle and it is easy to get involved. Set a physical activity goal of your choice, anything from a 30-minute walk with your dog, to a 5km run, playing Frisbee, skiing or even dance... and post your video or photo on social media using #HospitalityHustle.
A variety of prizes and discounts will be drawn and awarded to registered participants and the event will conclude with a province-wide dance party on May 30th, 2021.
Individuals or teams can register online at BCHF Odlum Brown #Hospitality Hustle, challenge others to get involved, and be sure to contact lucy@bchospitalityfoundation.com
The BCHF is here for the tourism industry, let's make sure we are here for them.
