There are many programs and initiatives to advance this year and our team has been taking the time to review and rework a number of them to make sure they address the industry's needs and can be easily accessed.
Tourism Resiliency Program
The Tourism Resiliency Program (TRP), launched in 2020, continues into 2021 and if you have been part of the program we hope that you will continue to watch for new webinars, take advantage of the training opportunities, and the one-on-one meetings with TOTA's advisors. If you have not worked with our TRP advisors in the past year and feel you could benefit from speaking with one of them you can learn more and register or connect with us by emailing Recovery@TOTABC.com.
Biosphere Commitment Program
Biosphere Commitment and stakeholder participation continue to expand and more of our members are taking the opportunity to have an eco-efficiency assessment, work on their health and safety plans through our go2HR representatives, and explore many new additions to the overall program to assist travel businesses in developing and implementing sustainability goals. If you would like to know more please connect with us through the Expression of Interest form.
Tourism Skills Training Program for Domestic Tourism
TOTA has been awarded funding to deliver the Tourism Skills Training (TST) Program for Domestic Tourism. This fully funded, market-driven employment program will help the region’s employers and employees capitalize on domestic tourism by focusing on training skills development for the region's tourism labor force.
In partnership with TOTA, and delivered by the University of Victoria-Peter B Gustavson School of Business, this full-time, online program will prepare participants for positions within the domestic tourism sector in the Thompson Okanagan region. Delivered over a 13-week period, the program will include instructional days, mentorship, employment coaching, and job placement support.
The program is focused on those whose jobs have been impacted by COVID-19 and who are unemployed or precariously employed individuals (casual, seasonal, or part-time). Priority participants will be persons with disabilities, Indigenous peoples, and immigrants. Eligible participants must be at least 15 years of age and workers 55+ are encouraged to apply.
Participant selection for the 60 seats in the program will begin in January with a training start date of February 8, 2021.
Keep Connected in 2021
These are but a few of the many many things that will be happening at TOTA to start the new year and we will continue to make sure that you are updated on the other many initiatives planned for 2021. This year will still bring the tourism industry many challenges, however collectively we will work with you to grow and strengthen our industry for the future.
Keep connected and watch for updates through our News Centre for ongoing information.
Move Forward Better in 2021
Most of us are very glad to be ushering out this year and ringing in a new one, believing in all the promise it may hold.
Most of us are very glad to be ushering out this year and ringing in a new one, believing in all the promise it may hold.

It will be incredible to read what the history books eventually tell us about 2020. However, regardless of whether it becomes known as The Great Pause, or The Year that Time Stood Still, or even if the outcomes create a new and better world order, we who have lived through it will always know how challenging a year it really was.
There is no question that, in the past ten months, we have lost our innocence and that, as we go forward, while we have gained wisdom and insight, we have learned a lot about our fears, stresses, and the impact of long-term anxiety.
If we at TOTA could wish for anything for 2021, our hope is that we collectively find health and well-being that is not just physical in nature but provides the mental strength and fortitude that will enable us to take on whatever this new year brings. Let's hope we can take the past year's many lessons to help become more enlightened citizens of the world and move forward better, together.
Without question, the road ahead is not straight, nor will it be smooth, but there is hope that comes with each new year, a renewed hope and spirit that our world needs now more than ever.
Raise a glass and a toast to all for having made it to the end of 2020; our tourism industry has been beaten up but not beaten, we are resilient, and we are ready for this new year and better days ahead in 2021.
Happy New Year from the entire Team at TOTA
Take Time to Reflect this Holiday Season
My wish for all of us this holiday season is that we can take this time to consider how we want to be different, better, more considerate, more appreciative of all that we have and all that is possible for the future. That we find contentment in our own company, peace in our own thoughts, and the strength to get through this period in history. And, while it is not the same, we can still stay connected through the marvels of the modern technology, making sure those around us, both near and far, know that they are in our hearts and minds.
As I sit to write this year's Christmas message it is almost unfathomable to realize what we have been through in the past ten months. The world as a whole, our country, the province of B.C., and certainly the tourism industry has been challenged in a way we have never experienced in this generation. Not one among us could have anticipated in December of 2019 where we would be in 2020 as we approached the holiday season.

Tremendous loss has permeated this year's story, be it through business, individual employment, personal freedom, or worst of all, lives. We have been under attack by an unknown, invisible enemy and no longer feel safe in the company of our own friends and family, let alone strangers. Uncertainty and anxiety have touched even the most strong and certainly have caused vulnerable individuals to be even more so.
While it is very hard to accept what is taking place and how so much has dramatically changed in a short time, it is equally important to remember that this will end. With the arrival of the vaccine, we know that while it will take time there is an end in sight and we will before too long, go back to a new version of normal.
Perhaps, there is an opportunity to appreciate the possibilities of what lay ahead in the quiet and silence of these holidays. To remind ourselves of what we truly hold dear and as and when life begins to resume, that we ensure we do not take "regular life" for granted. Spending time with others, traveling, visiting, gathering together, will all resume in the weeks and months to come and we may never again have a moment to pause and reflect on what is important.
Be Kind, Be Calm, Stay Healthy
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Vote for Thompson Okanagan at Lonely Planet Readers' Choice Awards
The Thompson Okanagan region has been invited to participate in Lonely Planet's Best In Travel Readers' Choice Awards. It would be outstanding to have the Thompson Okanagan region recognized internationally for our collective efforts towards sustainable and responsible tourism. Voting closes December 31.
The Thompson Okanagan region has been invited to participate in Lonely Planet's Best In Travel Readers' Choice Awards. It would be outstanding to have the Thompson Okanagan region recognized internationally for our collective efforts towards sustainable and responsible tourism, as outlined in the updated 10-year regional tourism strategy, Embracing Our Potential 2.0.
Sustainable experiences in the Thompson Okanagan include accessible nature, parks and protected areas, Indigenous cuisine, locally grown food, and biking trails. Photos from Destination BC Content Hub.
The Readers' Choice initiative was launched last year to give Lonely Planet readers an opportunity to share and celebrate their favourite destinations, organizations, products, and experiences. This year, the awards have been adapted into three overarching categories: Sustainability, Community, and Diversity. As tourism starts to come back in the weeks and months ahead, we know that all three of these priorities will be top of mind as we Move Forward Better.
From now throughout the month of December, you can vote for your favourite Destination in the three noted subject areas, with winners announced in mid-January. It is free to participate and all you need to make a nomination is a working email address.
Here's how to nominate the Thompson Okanagan in three easy steps:
1. Go to the Lonely Planet's Best In Travel page before December 31, 2020
2. Nominate the Thompson Okanagan region in the area of Sustainability with your story of responsible tourism
3. Let your followers and industry colleagues know how to do the same by sharing the link (lonelyplanet.com/best-in-travel?ballot=open) or the TOTA News Centre Post
Life is not going to be the same for some time to come but when we are once again traveling it would be great to ensure the Thompson Okanagan's story of Sustainability is top of mind with travelers.
Thank you for taking the time to nominate the region and to continue to support the important work that we are all doing to ensure the long term success of tourism.

The Good News(letter) features a remarkable story from our region, plus a snapshot of more good news. Brought to you twice a month.
This edition of Good News is brought to you by Shawn, from the Rotary Centre for the Arts in downtown Kelowna.
Feature Story:
Kamloops Wine Trail
The Kamloops Wine Trail showcases a group of wineries in the scenic Thompson Valley. 2020 meant temporary closures and many changes, including a pivot to home deliveries, curbside pick-up, and outdoor tastings. Despite the loss of out-of-province visitors this season, locals "filled the void" and winery sales were on par, if not higher in some cases! On top of that, Kamloops Wine Trail is happy to have found more partnerships and collaborations that are here to stay - "We're in this together".
Right now, they're offering Holiday Packs with a selection of six wines from three Kamloops wineries (free shipping within BC). Support local! 😊
Kelowna's Rotary Centre for the Arts is open and offering several at home programs, as well as educational community programming - virtually and in person (with all protocols in place). Also, you can continue to support local artists through virtual shows!
Glohaven Community Hub is launching the Beta Test of their timely site, on a mission to provide a digital marketplace that makes it easier to shop and support local. Creators of authentic local products and experiences are invited to test with Glohaven through this link!
A View to Remember B&B (the longest running B&B in the region) just picked up two awards at this year's Key Business Awards. Owners Sue and Dann say they've had a fairly strong season and are already booking into the new year.
The Valemount Visitor Services team just earned a Travellers’ Choice award from TripAdvisor for their consistently great reviews, friendliness, and ranking in the top 10 percent of places to stop!
Do you have good news or a remarkable story you'd like to share?
Be Kind, Be Calm, and Stay Safe This Season of Giving
To all of the many tourism business employees, managers, and owners that have made valiant efforts to endure 2020, I applaud and appreciate all of your hard work and sacrifice. There will be better days to come, of that, there is no doubt, but for what we have been through and how you have all risen to the occasion, thank you for all of your hard work, dedication, and effort to move forward.
There are not many people that aren't waiting for the end of 2020 and most would consider it one of the most difficult periods of our generation. Notwithstanding the wars of the past, the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us and continues to challenge us in ways that would have been quite unimaginable, just one year ago.
Thompson Okanagan Winter. DBC Content Hub - Apex Mountain Resort Snowboarding, Sovereign Lake Nordic Adaptive Snowshoe, Sun Peaks Resort Family Fun, Big White Ski Resort Aerial.
On a daily basis, we are being asked to adhere to new and broadening restrictions, escalating numbers of infections and deaths, financial and work worries, and the growing anxiety that comes from continual uncertainty. Now, as we approach the holidays and Christmas period, when we normally anticipate time with family and friends, the reality is becoming ever clear that this will not be a time to gather together.
It is a time, however, where we need to work together more than ever and to show appreciation for the people with us. It is a time to ensure that they know that their individual commitments and sacrifices to help get us all through this year do not go unnoticed.
I would personally like to acknowledge the many people on the TOTA team who have done just that. Each of you has made enormous changes to their day to day work as we, like so many organizations, had to find new ways to continue to operate and support our industry. Learning new skills and adapting old ones, creating new programs, and finding new partners, none of this was what any of us planned for. The team has taken on roles as counselors providing an empathic ear; resource managers to find and direct supports to the industry as they were needed; grant writers to assist in the search for funding opportunities that can move projects forward into a new and better future; and advocates to government at all levels.
None of these were roles that any of the team anticipated having in January of 2020 and yet, as we close off the year, each one of them has re-equipped themselves to be able to do these initiatives, including the Tourism Resiliency Program, adapting as the year has required.
They have worked from home, from the office, and back to their homes, been on more video calls and committee meetings than seems possible, and managed to create and execute a 2-day virtual Summit and wine tasting with over 600 attendees.
It has not been easy and we are not through it yet but as someone said to me recently we are at least "at the beginning of the end" of the pandemic.
I encourage you to be kind, be calm, and stay safe as we enter into this season of giving, and to find ways big and small to thank those around you for the effort they are making, not just this year, but especially this year.

En Route Travel Canada
Kimo and Joanne Linders of En Route Travel Canada specialize in offering an innovative range of flexible, pre-booked RV itineraries to European tour operators. Their business model is 100% reliant on overseas travelers and open borders - 2020 presented a challenge. With the average Canadian RVer only venturing about 200km from home, pivoting by offering routes to the local market was not a viable option.
Instead, Kimo and Joanne took this summer as an opportunity to fine-tune their product, covering 12-thousand kilometers of ground on an RV adventure of their own. Since the first months of the pandemic, Kimo and Joanne have been gathering resources and staying on top of best practices and regulations, including through support from the Tourism Resiliency Program, to make the change in plans a reality. They were able to discover new experiences to add to itineraries, establish new partnerships, create themed trips, and optimize their offering - laying the groundwork for what's ahead.
Caravan Farm Theatre in Armstrong has announced they will still be able to offer their beloved Winter Sleigh Ride Journey this year - with protocols to keep everyone safe and a theatrical experience like no other.

We are, however, very excited that the technology we are using will not only allow you to network with other attendees, speakers, and panelists but will enable you to meet with businesses on the tradeshow floor and participate in an online silent auction.
Another first for this year is the collaboration with our colleagues in the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast to bring to you this joint 2-day event. Both of our tourism regions have experienced significant challenges in the past several years due to wildfires, floods, landslides, and, now, COVID-19. Working together we have been able to secure an outstanding lineup of speakers and panelists that we will help to support, redirect, and motivate all of us for the year ahead.
Finally, through the support of a variety of corporate and public partners, this year's virtual conference is offered without a registration fee. We hope this enables more of our stakeholders within our region as well as those interested in tourism businesses and partners outside of our regions to take part in this event.
Watch the Summit 2020 Introduction to learn more about the event schedule:
We ask and encourage those of you that are able to participate in the option to DONATE when you register, as the funds raised will continue to support our ongoing commitment to the TOTA Tourism Excellence Scholarship Program for post-secondary institution tourism students. Those that register and donate $50+ before November 10 11:59 PM have the opportunity to experience a Virtual Wine Tasting hosted by Mission Hill Family Estate Winery on November 25.
Saying "this has been a difficult year" does not even begin to scratch the surface of what our industry has gone through. We hope this unique virtual event will enable you to take time to stand back from the day to day challenges, consider varied perspectives, and hopefully have some virtual or even real fun along the way.

Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm
Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm is a small, family business with community and sustainability at the heart of everything they do. Opening the farm to visitors was not a reality this year - but operations have continued through the online store. Along with farm grown-and-produced products, you can find a series of workshops and recipes on their website. Things have been very different, but Andrea McFadden, her family and staff have found ways to keep their spirits high and business running - while giving back to the community.
Since visitors wouldn't be coming by for guided farm tours and leaving with a package of herbs or seeds this year, they decided to set up a mailbox on the farm's fence instead so locals could help themselves to free seeds for their gardens. As a gift of appreciation, the farm has also donated over 150 custom hand balms and 100 dry skin toners to frontline workers in the Okanagan.
Holiday shopping season is around the corner (or already here, if you're good at planning ahead), and small businesses value your support - now and always. Shopping local is good for the planet, good for the soul, and creates a positive ripple effect throughout your community.
Despite a drop in out-of-province visitors Miska Haven Bed & Breakfast says a rise in ‘staycations’ has helped make up the difference - and they're happy to offer more locals an escape into nature this year!
Speaking of staycations - Summerland Resort is offering a new "Date Night" package for a Friday eve mini getaway, complete with a bottle of local wine and optional dinner from Brodo Kitchen waiting in your fridge.
On top of raising $1,975 in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada, UBC-O JDC West's Chillin’ for Charity campaign donated ice cream treats to seniors at a Kelowna retirement home this year & supported an elementary school's breakfast program. :)
Finnair introduced an initiative called "Taste of Finnair", selling their typically in-flight business class meals in grocery stores for an "everyday luxury" experience and to create opportunities for previously laid off staff!
A Brazilian chef is harnessing food waste to empower communities with cooking courses using food scraps and education on home-growing produce. (Fun fact: did you know banana peels are packed with nutrients and can be incorporated into savory and sweet recipes?)

A Memorable November
November is shaping up to be a month to remember, with the US election, TOTA AGM & Summit on November 25 and 26, and perhaps an early start to ski season.
I have always found November to be a rather nondescript month. Summer a distant memory; the beautiful days of fall have begun to turn chilly. The total hours of sunlight are diminishing quickly, and the festivities that mark the Christmas season are still too far into the future to lift your spirits.
However, in true 2020 fashion, this November is serving up a variety of novel situations that are sure to make it anything but dull.
On the light side, many television series, new and returning, that would have typically debuted in September have moved their new season start dates to November. Nothing better than finally being able to catch up with some of your favourite shows, particularly as the daylight shortens.
Much more seriously, the US Presidential Election taking place November 3 has been a cause for discussion and debate as the entire world waits and watches. Regardless of which party and leader are ultimately victorious, the potential ramifications are concerning.
If you believe the farmer's almanac, snow is coming and a lot of it, something all of our ski hills are eagerly awaiting. Should the meteorologists be correct, we will be skiing in November - some fresh air, fresh powder, and mountain sunshine will surely lift our spirits.
Finally, save the date for TOTA's virtual AGM & Summit on November 25 and 26. The tourism Summit will be cohosted by the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) and our northwestern neighbour, the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association (CCCTA). Registration will open shortly, together with the details of the fantastic lineup of guest speakers and panelists who will take on the difficult topics facing our industry.
November is no longer a month sitting on the sidelines; this month is lining up to be a month to remember...

"The Match Has Been Lit, the Fire's Back at Chute Lake Lodge."
Over the past few years, a lot of hard work and dedication has gone into bringing Chute Lake Lodge, located just above the Naramata Bench between Kelowna and Penticton, back to life. With a history dating back about a century, the lodge has seen many hardships over the years and almost fell of the map.
2020 has come with a new set of challenges, but through all the changes, new guidelines, and regulations - the team at Chute Lake Lodge has created a well-rounded, four-season destination and experience for every sense of adventure. If you haven't visited in a while, you'll notice a lot has changed this year, including "glamping" tents, beautiful cabins, a sauna, and rentals for any outdoor activity you can think of.
The brand and experience the team at Chute Lake Lodge has created is all about cultivating connection - with nature, those closest to you, and with oneself. Following a mid-autumn hike through the changing trees, snowshoe excursion, or quiet paddle on the lake, guests can warm up at the restaurant serving handcrafted cocktails and Canadian lodge food. Wide-open spaces offer an added sense of safety and ability for locals to get away, disconnect, and (re-)discover the magic of what's been close to home all along.
Despite some major curveballs, it's been a surprisingly good year for many wineries on Naramata Bench - some of the COVID-19 related changes have had a positive effect!
The South Shuswap Chamber of Commerce is preparing to launch their Shop the South Shuswap Campaign - encouraging residents to shop local and support small businesses.
Igloos in the Okanagan! Junction 3 Coffee House in Osoyoos has added cozy igloos so guests can enjoy their patio through the colder months!
Global CO2 emissions show biggest ever drop for a half-year period (8.8%) in the first six months of 2020!
Singapore Airline's pop-up restaurant inside one of their grounded A380 double-decker superjumbo jets - serving menus according to cabin class - sold out within 30 minutes!

B.C. Election Results
Elections bring a sense of energy and focus on essential matters that often slip away in the days that follow. We talk about issues; we ask questions; we pay real attention to what is happening in our communities and our province. We are invigorated by dialogue and exercising our right to vote.
I have always found that immediately after an election, there is a sense of letdown. I'm not referring to the results or who the winners and losers are, rather a feeling similar to the experience after a major championship such as the Stanley Cup or Super Bowl when you suddenly realize the season is over.
Elections bring a sense of energy and focus on essential matters that often slip away in the days that follow. We talk about issues; we ask questions; we pay real attention to what is happening in our communities and our province. We are invigorated by dialogue and exercising our right to vote.
I applaud every person who puts their name forward to take a stand and run for any political party. Whether you were on the winning side of the ballot or not this past Saturday, you did something that most of us would never be brave enough to consider... You took the time to run for public office. Thank you!
To those who were successful and will be part of the new provincial legislature, we know that it is difficult and often thankless work. It certainly does not get any easier when the election is over. You will always have those that agree with your decisions and many, who are generally more vocal, that do not. These are difficult days as we continue to deal with the continued fallout from the pandemic. Our citizens look to the government to make decisions that will help us stay safe and keep the economy strong and healthy.
We will all have to work cooperatively, collaboratively, and seek innovative ways of thinking to collectively move forward. It will be a formidable time and I wonder what we will be reflecting on the next time this province goes to the polls.
As well, I would like to congratulate Lisa Beare on her re-election. Minister Beare has been a tremendous support to the tourism industry over the past three years. While she may or may not be once again our Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, I would personally like to thank her for all of her work and unwavering attention to this critically important industry in our province.

Skills Development Survey
I can hear the words as I sit to write this week's Manic Monday: "Glenn, we don't want to do another survey!" Well, like my mother often said to me when she would give me a bad-tasting dose of medicine, "Trust me, this will make you feel better."
Repeatedly we hear that a critical area of concern is in building the employee base in this region. Our team at TOTA is working to solve this issue, including the development of a specialized Tourism Professional Skills Training Program.
Not Another Survey...

Repeatedly we hear that a critical area of concern is in building the employee base in this region. Our team at TOTA is working to solve this issue, including the development of a specialized Tourism Professional Skills Training Program.
You may not feel better right away but this survey will definitely help us to support you in the near future. We believe this initiative will help to build a much needed base of trained employees.
Participants will receive training to develop specialized in-demand tourism skills, followed by a work placement to gain on the job experience to enhance the participant’s employability skills. The training will be delivered in a group environment, supported by a range of activities which may include counselling, vocational and/or learning assessments, work experience, job search skills, mentorship, referral to community resources, and post-project follow up.
Hiring graduates with these specialized skillsets will enable hospitality and tourism employers to focus on delivering high quality guest experiences and growing a sustainable and resilient business.
This unique program will focus on the areas of need that you as Tourism Stakeholders provide to us in the Skills Development Survey. Please take the time to complete this brief survey to help us better understand the employment needs of the industry.
If you are interested in hiring program participants for the 2021 peak season, you have the option to include your contact details and an Expression of Interest at the end of the survey.
It is another survey but one that can directly support the growth of the industry and your business in the future.

Maeghan and Jared Summers are the proud owners and operators of the Noble Pig Brewhouse and its sister property, Forno on 5th, both located in Kamloops. With a true passion for supporting their community in any way possible, they have turned the many challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic into opportunities to give back, re-invent, and inspire.
The Noble Pig has re-opened to serve guests with guidelines in place and a smaller menu - maintaining integrity by continuing to work in a scratch kitchen, with as many local suppliers as possible while maximizing flavour and minimizing food waste.
Maeghan and Jared temporarily closed their fine-dining inspired restaurant, Forno on 5th, due to challenges with limited capacity. A re-brand is currently in the works - stay tuned! Throughout the process, they have been continuously inspired by the support of fellow Kamloops restaurant owners. The hospitality community is coming together like never before to work toward a common goal.
"How Do We Support Each Other?"
After making the difficult decision to close their restaurants back in March, Maeghan and Jared's first thoughts centered around what could be done to support their team and community. They decided to give away over 800 meals to feed their team, their team's families, and the Kamloops community. Along with other restaurants, they donated large amounts of fresh produce and food products to the local Kamloops Food Bank, which "opened the floodgates" to more donations and, in turn, created opportunities for the food bank to provide healthy and wholesome options to the community.
Maeghan and Jared, your kindness and generosity is not only inspiring, but key to rebuilding a strong, resilient community and industry - Thank you.
Canada is taking big steps toward banning single-use plastics - some hard-to-recycle plastics including plastic grocery store bags and straws will be out of use nationwide by the end of 2021.
Hoodoo Adventure's events coordinator Nathalie Long will be climbing 8,848 meters (the equivalent of Mount Everest), within 24 hours - with the goal of raising enough funds to take 100 kids on canoe expeditions next season.
Throwback: Remarkable People
Here's a little something we found in our archives and thought was too good not to re-share (2-minute watch):

Fall is definitely upon us and to quote Game of Thrones: "Winter is Coming."
There is no one who knows what to expect in the weeks and months to come but there is also no question that we will all have to continue to adapt and support each other as we maneuver through these uncertain times.
It is true that some tourism businesses, in some parts of the region did well over the summer period, however, that is not the case for the vast majority of the region's stakeholders. Uncertainty remains the only constant and as we wait for the second wave of the virus there is speculation, worry, and fear that many tourism operators will not be able to make it through to next spring.
Funding programs are being announced and/or renewed both federally and provincially and a variety of other programs will be available to provide support to both individuals and companies. We know that it is difficult to navigate this ongoing information and we want to reinforce that the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Resiliency Program (TRP) is designed to help you find ways to assist you.
Through the TRP, TOTA together with our regional partners, has been offering one-on-one meetings with Program Advisors, a variety of Webinars, and ongoing access to experts if required. We have put in place the opportunity to access Micro Loans through Community Futures, Human Resources, and Mental Health supports, and the newly announced Ideas Labs. Through a partnership with Okanagan College, we will soon be able to offer one-on-one Expert Business Mentorship coaching sessions in specific specialty areas.
There is no cost to be part of the Tourism Resiliency Program, simply register online and a member of our team is in contact with you. If you have any questions, call us at 1-877-431-8489 (ext 8).
Finally, on November 25th and 26th, TOTA will be co-hosting our annual AGM and Summit (virtually) together with the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association. We hope you will save the date and join us for an important dialogue on "building forward better."
"Winter is Coming" and we will continue to focus efforts with our many partners on bringing industry the resources necessary to get through it. We will all need to be creative, coordinated, cooperative, and to communicate our needs with a collective voice to ensure our issues are fully understood.

TOTA CEO Appointed to Provincial Tourism Recovery Task Force
I was very honoured to have been asked last week by Tourism Minister Lisa Beare to serve on the BC Tourism Recovery Task Force together with nine other business and industry leaders from around the Province.
Our focus will be on reigniting BC's Tourism Sector and enhancing its long-term competitiveness. The Province has allocated $50 million for the economic recovery measures to be directed by this Task Force. One of the goals for this group will be to identify gaps in other funding programs to ensure that the tourism industry will be supported at the broadest level.

The Province has allocated $50 million for the economic recovery measures to be directed by this Task Force. One of the goals for this group will be to identify gaps in other funding programs to ensure that the tourism industry will be supported at the broadest level.
As a group, I know we fully appreciate the magnitude of the work ahead. The additional industry leaders appointed to this Tourism Task Force include:
Tamara Vrooman, President & CEO, Vancouver International Airport (Chair);
Walt Judas, CEO, Tourism Industry Association of BC;
Brenda Baptiste, Chair, Indigenous Tourism BC;
Nancy Small, Chair, BC Destination Management Organization Association, Tourism Richmond;
Ingrid Jarrett, President & CEO, BC Hotel Association;
Rod Harris, adjunct professor, Royal Roads University;
Richard Porges, Interim President and CEO, Destination BC
Amy Thacker, Chair, BC Regional Tourism Secretariat, and CEO, Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association; and
a representative from the Labour sector, to be named.
As everyone is aware, recovery will be a long process; however, it will help to steward us through future crises if done effectively. In addition to working with this new task force, I am proud to actively engage with many other groups representing tourism in this region over the past several months, including acting as vice-chair of the Minister's Tourism Engagement Council, a representative on the Destination BC Tourism Marketing Committee, Chair of the BC Regional Tourism Secretariat, and Director on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, to name just a few. All of these organizations and many more are striving to create thoughtful and meaningful initiatives to assist in bringing tourism back with a forward focus on sustainability and resiliency.
We will keep all of our stakeholders updated through regular communications as we work to utilize all available resources in the most effective manner and keep tourism viable and solvent for today and well into the future.
