Join TOTA's Regional Access & Inclusion Liaison, Sonja Gaudet, as she races with SCI BC Team Okanagan on June 23 in downtown Kelowna for the 12th Charity Challenge Roll n' Stroll. 

 Sonja works with tourism businesses and promotes the Access BC project that aims to improve accessible outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities for everyone through universal design, access, and inclusion.

 You can donate to Sonja and the other Okanagan team members as they fundraise for SCI BC Peer Support and Information Services in the Okanagan.

 These programs provide answers, social connections, educational opportunities, and unique life experiences for people living with SCI and related disabilities.

The TOTA team enjoyed a full day of golf, food, and fun last week at Bighorn Golf & Country Club.

The Tourism Inspiration Centre is officially open, and Barbara, Sam, and Trina are ready to welcome everyone to the Centre this year! Stop by for regional information, events, local goods, scenic views, and more!

This past winter, TOTA and the Tourism Inspiration Centre became Rainbow Registered. This shows our commitment to creating a welcoming environment that respects and celebrates all individuals.

The Tourism Inspiration Centre is located on Highway 97C right above Peachland and is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 AM - 5 PM and 10 AM - 4 PM on Sundays in May and June.

Vineyards and Orchards Receive Help to Replant A new enhanced replant program will provide as much as $70 million in support to help producers replace damaged, diseased and low-producing vines, plants and trees with climate-resilient varieties that produce in-demand, premium fruit. Canadian Tourism Labour Market Snapshot: February 2024 The Tourism Industry saw an increase in February compared to previous months. A summary of the findings will be presented in March to the TOTA board, Destination BC CEO, BC Ministry of Tourism, Art, Culture, and Sport (MTACS). Please complete the survey by March 7. Industry Presentations At the Tourism Industry Association of BC (TIABC) conference in Victoria, TOTA CEO Ellen Walker-Matthews shared TOTA’s sustainability journey and the newly launched BC Tourism Climate Resiliency Initiative (BCTCRI), created in partnership with the BC Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport, Destination British Columbia, Indigenous Tourism BC, and the regional partners: TOTA, 4VI, Cariboo Chilcotin Coast, Northern British Columbia, Kootenay Rockies, and Vancouver, Coast, and Mountains. As well, Ellen took part in a round table on Sustainable tourism in the central interior of BC at the Livable Cities, Collaborative Communities Sustainability Conference at Thompson Rivers University, with Darcy Alexander, Court Edeburn, Anne Terwiel, and Lisa White. Industry Resources Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC The Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC supports grants for community-based initiatives that create and shape meaningful outdoor recreational and nature-based experiences for people in BC. Wine Growers of BC Town Hall Sessions Address Wine Industry Concerns The Wine Growers of BC (WGBC) have held sessions involving industry stakeholders to discuss the recent climate events in December 2022 and January 2024 and the resulting crop loss. You can learn more about the feedback and input on potential mitigating options for assistance from the government from the Penticton Town Hall Recording.  TIABC Releases the 2023 TIABC Advocacy Report Card The Tourism Industry Association of BC's (TIABC) Annual Advocacy Report Card showcases the organization's initiatives, efforts, and achievements of the organization from January to December. TIABC invites you to read their report and connect with them at info@tiabc.ca for questions, comments, or recommendations on TIABC’s direction or priorities, as well as any other issues affecting your business.  Changes Made to Cannabis Consumption on Patios The Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) has announced changes to improve opportunities for the cannabis industry in tourism and hospitality.  UNTWO Becomes "UN Tourism" The World Tourism Organization has changed its name and brand to UN Tourism. With this name change the organization has reaffirmed its status as the United Nations specialized agency for tourism and the global leader of tourism. The OBWB began calling for a temporary moratorium on watercraft coming into BC. Support for the moratorium has been gathering steam with letters coming in from BC municipalities, chambers of commerce, TOTA, and others. Survey to understand bat well-being around awnings & window shades Got Bats? BC Community Bat Project is conducting a survey in response to reports about bats being squished in power awnings and exterior window shades connected to some businesses and residences.   There have been 30 reports from the Okanagan, and it is reported that bats seeking cooler environments during increasingly warmer weather are seeking shelter in these awnings and window shades.   Learn more and complete survey

Tourism Outlook 2023: Rebounding Stronger than Expected, Yet Challenges Persist Destination Canada released its latest Tourism Outlook: Unlocking Opportunities for the Sector, showing total tourism revenue is set to exceed 2019 levels, generating $109.5 billion in 2023. This represents the recovery of the tourism sector from the pandemic, one year earlier than projected. However, recovery across regions and sectors has been uneven. The challenge ahead is creating profitable growth for tourism businesses given current debt loads and inflationary pressures.

The Destination BC Learning Centre has a case study on Eagle Wing Tours, a local whale watching company based in Victoria, that has made sustainable tourism an integral and meaningful component to their business.

go2HR Resources Mental Health Support for Employees The winter holidays can be a mentally challenging time for workers and seasonal staff. Employers can speak to go2HR's Workplace Psychological Health & Safety coaches to get advice and support for the mental health needs. Safer Spaces Holiday Toolkit Workers should feel safe and respected year round, including over the holidays. The Safer Spaces holiday toolkit includes downloadable resources to help employers train staff on how to recognize and respond to inappropriate behaviour at parties and during shifts as they work with guests. Labour Market Information: Employment Trends for November In November 2023, BC's Tourism and Hospitality sector confronted persistent challenges in employment and recovery, showing a 3.9% decrease in employment from October 2023, dropping from 343,250 to 330,000. The Thompson Okanagan region experienced increased employment.

Restaurant Culture Shift for Successful Teams & Sustainable Careers Chefs' Table Society of British Columbia is seeking restaurants (with 1-2 locations) to participate in a 1 month pilot program that will develop pathways to successful teams and sustainable careers. Participants will receive one-on-one support to develop tools that target recruiting, retention, staff development, equity, diversity and inclusion AND systems changes.

Digital Adoption Grant Program Small and medium businesses can get a grant and access to expert advice to increase online sales, reduce costs, better manage inventory, and more through the Canada Digital Adoption Program.

Outdoor Recreation Roadmap for Community Organizations An online course for community organizations, providing tools and understanding to invest in outdoor recreation that will create healthier communities, economies, and people. “Return of the Market” Series by Canadian Inbound Tourism Association The Canadian Inbound Tourism Association (CITAP+) believes it is critical for all market segments to understand how to work together to support inbound travel. To bridge connections, CITAP+ introduced the Return of the Market Educational Series. This series kicks off with a focus on the China market.

International Experience Canada (IEC) Opens the 2024 Season to Welcome International Youth, Including New Arrangements IEC is a reciprocal program that allows Canadian and international youth aged 18–35 to work and travel in each other’s countries. Canada has established youth mobility partnerships with over 35 countries and territories, and in 2023, signed new arrangements or agreements with Finland, Iceland and Ukraine, and improved existing ones with South Korea and the United Kingdom.

Memorial Scholarship & Support for Thompson Rivers University Students Involved in Fatal Crash On November 29, three Thompson Rivers University (TRU) students were involved in a tragic car collision near the school’s campus in Kamloops. Owyn McInnis, died, while Owen Waterhouse and Riley Brinnen were seriously injured. This is a tremendous tragedy in the region and our hearts go out to everyone involved. Those that wish to support can make a donation to Riley’s GoFundMe page, Owen’s GoFundMe page, or the TRU Owyn McInnis Memorial Men's Volleyball Athletic Award.

Recovery Campaigns to Encourage Travel to Thompson Okanagan & BC TOTA and Destination BC (DBC) launched coordinated marketing campaigns to encourage travel in the fall months and beyond to impacted areas in the Thompson Okanagan region and the province overall. DBC’s provincial campaign "Help BC by Exploring BC" was augmented by a regional and community campaign entitled "Travel Now" and supported by the TOTA Marketing Team.

Highway 3 Tourism Campaign The Highway 3 Tourism Alliance—a collaboration led by three regions (Kootenay Rockies Tourism Association, Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) and Vancouver, Coast & Mountains Tourism Region)—has launched its first campaign. The campaign includes a new website, which showcases communities in BC along Highway 3 (including the Similkameen, South Okanagan, and Boundary Country areas of the Thompson Okanagan), shares recommended itineraries, and encourages travellers to slow down to enjoy a classic road trip. Business Feature: Osoyoos Desert Centre The Osoyoos Desert Centre is a nonprofit charitable organization founded in 1991 to conserve the rich, biologically diverse habitats of British Columbia’s southern interior. The South Okanagan is home to one of the highest concentrations of rare and at-risk species in all of Canada. Through its conservation, restoration and education efforts, the Osoyoos Desert Centre strives to generate public knowledge, respect and active concern for these fragile and endangered ecosystems. In a recent email update, Lee McFadyen, President of the Osoyoos Desert Centre, shared her experience of this past summer, which is all too familiar for many in the industry. She begins by reflecting on the past summer, reminiscing about visitors enjoying tours and events on their new boardwalk and under the new pergola over the picnic tables.

"Then whammy; a stray spark ignited vegetation near Oroville. With strong south winds the flames raced northward, people hurriedly evacuating, homes saved by valiant firefighters. As the fire was burning fiercely above us, we were concerned about stray embers igniting the tinder dry vegetation and sweeping through the Centre. Foremost in our minds was the safety of staff and visitors. What to do? The answer was obvious. Close! Until the threat passed. Close, even though this would result in no visitors for two weeks and further affect admissions already impacted by smoke and heat. But safety came first.

The threat passed; the Centre was intact. We reopened, but overall conditions reduced outdoor activity and visitor numbers remained down. So here we are. The challenging summer has reduced our cash flow significantly. Despite this, our commitment to our many programs is not squelched. We have the energy to continue. The site provides the platform, but cash is essential to maintaining the educational and fun programs enjoyed by our diverse visitors. Board and staff are optimistic, but we need your help. TOTA at the BC Cabinet & First Nations Leaders’ Gathering The BC Regional Destination Marketing Organization CEOs, including TOTA CEO Ellen Walker-Matthews, were invited to attend the BC Cabinet & First Nations Leaders’ Gathering with Minister Lana Popham, Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport. The Gathering included discussion sessions and one-on-one meetings to connect leaders and help move forward on the path to building a fair, just, and equitable future through government-to-government relationships that support reconciliation and self-determination.

New Provincial Parks in North Thompson and Boundary Country The newly acquired land includes: Wells Gray Park (near Clearwater): 33.25 hectares of an inholding that contains wetlands, advanced second-growth forest and habitat for black bears, moose, deer, birds and small mammals. Gladstone Park (near Grand Forks): 8.28 hectares that contains a popular local swimming area known as the potholes. The addition will help improve the existing trail network and connectivity through the park. The Province is consulting with First Nations’ governments prior to making decisions about legally establishing the lands as parks and protected areas.

The theme, “Now is the Time,” reflected the focus on continuous preparation to ensure readiness of tourism professionals and businesses, which will ultimately elevate visitor experiences, strengthen businesses, and regenerate communities. Attendees finished the event with many insights and connections to take back to their companies and communities. The event and silent auction raised over $6,000 to donate to regional wildfire relief efforts. The funds will be donated equally to the following charities: Central Okanagan Fire Relief Fund, a group of professional firefighters from Kelowna, West Kelowna and Lake Country distributing funds to those impacted by wildfires in the area. Shuswap Community Foundation Emergency Response Fund, to support the communities affected by the Bush Creek East wildfire in North Shuswap by assisting community-based organizations to recover and rebuild. Tourism and hospitality workers were specifically noted as being in demand.  Temporary measures have been extended under the Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP), including maintaining the maximum duration of employment for low-wage positions at up to two years, and permitting employers in certain sectors – including accommodation and food services – to hire up to 30 percent of their workforce through the TFWP for low-wage positions. Midnight Musings from the TOTA Team Hi there, Last week we were honoured to be joined by Minister Popham, Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport; together with Minister Robinson, Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, in Kelowna for the announcement of a new Food, Beverage, and Tourism Centre to open in 2026 at Okanagan College's Kelowna Campus. This nearly $50M project will receive $44M in provincial funding and once complete will see an additional +500 Culinary, Hospitality, and Tourism students graduating annually; something that will benefit the entire tourism industry, throughout the region and beyond. The Ministers were then hosted to high tea at the Hotel Eldorado. meeting with senior team members of Argus properties, as well as TOTA Chair Michael J Ballingall, Tourism Kelowna CEO Lisanne Ballantyne, and TOTA CEO, Ellen Walker-Matthews. Minister Popham continued on with a tour of CedarCreek Estate Winery, heading into the vineyards for an overview of the fulsome regenerative initiatives that have been incorporated at their farm and that they continue to expand upon. On Wednesday, Minister Sandhu hosted Minister Popham at a round table for a number of Vernon and area leaders followed by a meeting with the Canada West Ski Area Association. Finally, Minister Popham opened the BC Winter Games and attended a number of events. We thank both ministers for joining us in the region last week to listen not only to the challenges and issues facing the region but the tremendous opportunities for our regional tourism industry. The AIC will consist of 8-11 appointed members, the majority of which will be either persons with disabilities and/or individuals who support, or are from organizations that support persons with disabilities. Take Survey → TIAC Survey on Debt Relief Does your tourism business currently hold a Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA), Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF), or Highly Affected Sectors Credit Availability Program (HASCAP) loan? If so, TIAC wants to hear from you!   Last year, the government extended the repayment deadline for CEBA loan holders to qualify for partial loan forgiveness to December 31, 2023; but in recent months TIAC has heard from some operators that are concerned about their capacity to repay by then. As a result, TIAC is launching a study with Nanos Research to more fully understand the issue across Canada.
