TOTA invites tourism organizations to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to learn and plan with education, resources, customized action plans, and tools around the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability.

Kelowna, B.C. - The BC Regional Tourism Secretariat (BCRTS) regions, including the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA), are pleased to announce a new sustainability initiative called the BC Tourism Sustainability Network (BCTSN), launching in March 2023 with support from Pacific Economic Development Canada.
The BC Tourism Sustainability Network provides one-on-one support and resources to tourism businesses wishing to incorporate sustainability into their operations. This streamlined, supportive program will help tourism operators, regardless of prior experience, define a clear roadmap to integrate sustainability in their operations, strategy, and storytelling.
TOTA invites tourism organizations to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to learn and plan with education, resources, customized action plans, and tools around the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability.

Program Overview
The BC Tourism Sustainability Network has been designed to support tourism businesses on their sustainability journey, providing foundational knowledge, capacity, best practices, and action across the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability.
Participating businesses are paired with a Program Advisor who completes a needs assessment and creates a customized roadmap to sustainability. This plan includes high-value resource guides and videos to support businesses in their chosen focus areas - such as energy, waste, water, and carbon footprint.
Further resources cover topics like responsible travel, regenerative tourism, and sustainability planning.
Sustainability subject matter experts from Synergy Enterprises will host a series of three virtual workshops. These engaging sessions will be open to all businesses participating in the program and dive deeper into one of the three core pillars of sustainability - People, Planet, and Prosperity.
Program Details
One-on-one Guidance
Participating businesses will start the program by meeting with a BCTSN Program Advisor for a sustainability consultation. Program Advisors develop a customized sustainability roadmap for participating businesses that include next steps, recommended educational resources and partner program referrals to support ongoing sustainability goals.
Educational Resources
In collaboration with Synergy Enterprises, the BCTSN will develop a series of educational guides, videos, and resources on a wide range of sustainability topics. These user-friendly resources will be hosted on the TourismResiliency.ca website and help guide businesses through the planning and implementation phases of incorporating sustainable practices into everyday operations.
Workshop Series
In addition to the sustainability guides, videos and resources, three live workshops will be hosted by the Synergy Enterprises team. These engaging workshops are open to all participating businesses, and will dive deeper into one of the three core pillars of sustainability - People, Planet, and Prosperity

Recap of the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Summit: Biospherology Master Class
The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Summit: Biospherology Master Class was an immersive experience unlike any other Summit the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) has hosted. 120 people from across the region and British Columbia attended the Summit at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), February 21 - 22, 2023.
Attendees had an action packed day on their feet, moving through the TRU Campus with industry leaders who are experts in their respective fields. Through the Master Class collaborative, “hands on" approach, attendees gained knowledge and inspiration to incorporate responsible, sustainable practices into their communities and workplaces.
On February 21 & 22, the TOTA team hosted the 2022/23 Thompson Okanagan Tourism Summit in Kamloops, with 9 speakers through 6 presentations and 3 immersive sessions, sharing inspiration and key learnings with over 120 attendees.
The Biospherology theme reflected the focus on continuous education for tourism professionals that will ultimately elevate visitor experiences, strengthen businesses, regenerate communities, and reduce impacts within the surrounding environments.
Attendees finished the day with inspiration to take back to their companies and communities. The event was carbon neutral.

Welcome Party
On Tuesday, Tourism Kamloops hosted the Slide Into the Kamloops Social Scene Welcome Party at the Kamloops Curling Club and the Sandman Centre, in conjunction with the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s curling competition.
Attendees got a local taste, with live music by Dave Coalmine appetizers by Black Salt Catering and samples from the following:
The group then ventured to the Sandman Centre to watch provincial teams face off in the tournament.
Biospherology Master Class
On Wednesday, attendees got up bright and early for the Biospherology Master Class at Thompson Rivers University. The day started with breakfast and words of welcome from TOTA CEO Ellen Walker-Matthews.
Attendees ventured to the BC Centre for a Secwépemc welcome from Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc members and drummers. Kúkpi7 Rosanne Casimir shared her story and her community’s journey from finding the missing children at the Kamloops Residential School in 2020, to seeking reconciliation by visiting the Vatican.
We heard from Inuit artist Angus Cockney about his personal experience in residential school and his inspiring story about how he was able to move forward.
It is important to involve Indigenous communities in tourism and industry events, as they are the First Peoples of the land known today as the Thompson Okanagan. Indigenous people have continuously played an important role as stewards and the very core identity of Canadian places. We look forward to seeing Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc and the 32 other Indigenous communities in the region as they grow and thrive.

Immersive Master Classes
Then the group split into 1 of 3 Immersive Master Class. Each session was held three times so everyone had the chance to learn from the three industry leaders:
Build it Better led by James Gordon from TRU’s Environmental Programs and Research took professionals behind the scenes, walls, and infrastructure of Thompson Rivers University to demonstrate their commitment to a zero carbon future and how they have built infrastructure, systems, and creating innovations to ensure they meet those targets.
Another Perspective: Accessibility Immersive led by Sonja Gaudet (Thompson Okanagan Access & Inclusion Liaison and Gold Medal Paralympian) and Ginger Brunner (go2HR) shared a first hand experience what employees and guests experience if they have difficulties or impairments of sight, sensory, and mobility.
The Trash Buffet by Ben Liegey, founder of Better Table, shared how to utilize food sources that would normally be tossed. This hands-on session demonstrated a less wasteful approach to cooking and eating habits both at work and at home. Planning, education, and creativity can take cores, stems, and peels, then turn them into zero waste culinary magic.
For example, attendees tried a plant based Banana Bread made with banana peels and aquafaba (chickpea water) instead of eggs.
Attendees heard from Tourism Industry Association BC CEO, Walt Judas, on Emergency Preparedness and the BC Emergency Management Framework, including insights into the structure to support tourism partners and visitors on matters related to the four pillars of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
Over lunch, Rebecca Mackenzie (CEO + President) of the Culinary Tourism Alliance shared her passion about the interconnection between food, agriculture, tourism, arts, and culture. As well, the Culinary Tourism Alliance’s vision is to ensure food tourism is a meaningful and sustainable contributor to local economies in destinations worldwide. The alliance works with communities to grow food tourism by leveraging the history, heritage, and culture behind the food and drink that makes each destination unique.
As the closing keynote, Sonja Gaudet, Canadian Paralympic Gold Medalist, shared her story as the world’s most decorated wheelchair curler with three Paralympic gold medals (2006, 2010, 2014) and Canadian Curling Hall of Fame and BC Sports Hall of Fame inductee.
Born in North Vancouver and now residing in Vernon, Sonja shared how she has always approached challenges with her “can do” attitude and with that she paved the way for wheelchair curling across the nation.
The event ended with a Graduation Party, to celebrate the learnings of the day and a commitment to move forward better. Graduates received a mason jar grad cap, custom 3D printed from recycled material by The Rogerie. The mason jar was filled with goodies, including soap made with captured carbon dioxide from Fortis BC, part of their Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) program.
Future Events
The next TOTA Summit will be held in Penticton in October/November 2023 in conjunction with the TOTA AGM. As well, TOTA hosts an annual golf tournament in August/September.

Le titre des festivités, 7 Célébrations, a été choisi pour rendre hommage à l’un des principaux mandats de la TOTA, soit l’Engagement des 7 Affirmations pour 7 générations de Thompson Okanagan. Cet engagement s’inspire de la philosophie autochtone selon laquelle « les actes entrepris aujourd’hui ont des répercussions durables sur les sept générations suivantes ». Dans l’esprit d’un voyage investi et volontaire, les festivités se concentrent sur les traditions, les histoires et les cultures de certaines collectivités de la région, dans le but de leur donner vie pour les années à venir.

L’ Engagement des 7 Affirmations a été créé par laTOTA pour répondre à la nécessité d’élaborer des lignes directrices pour le tourisme durable et les voyages conscients. Il repose sur le principe des sept générations, enraciné dans la philosophie indigène : Les décisions que nous prenons aujourd’hui se répercuteront sur les sept générations à venir.
1. Racines véritables – Découvrez l’âme d’un lieu dans son histoire.

Free Sustainable Tourism Training Program by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada
The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) is launching a sustainable tourism training program to build awareness and capacity for tourism to develop more sustainably. The program is complementary and is available to all Canadian tourism businesses, not only TIAC members.
The program includes specialized workshops, one-on-one coaching, and certification support around several topics, provided by industry experts.
The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) is launching a ground-breaking sustainable tourism program to support communities across all 13 Canadian Provinces and Territories. The program will assist small and medium enterprises, Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs), and other tourism stakeholders and organizations across all sectors of the industry in building awareness and capacity to develop more sustainably; that is, in a manner that maximizes positive environmental, social, and economic impact while reducing negative externalities.
Participation in this program is complementary and is available to all Canadian tourism businesses, not only TIAC members.
The program includes specialized workshops, one-on-one coaching, and certification support around the following topics:

Fast Track to Sustainable Tourism & Pathway to Net Zero Carbon
Flourishing Business Strategy for Tourism

Thompson Okanagan Communities Receive Over $5.5 million in Funding from PacifiCan to Revitalize Public Spaces and Enhance Tourism Experiences
PacifiCan funding for 17 projects in the Thompson Okanagan through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund and the Tourism Relief Fund. Communities benefiting from funding include Kelowna, Penticton, Peachland, Vernon, Summerland, Keremeos, and Osoyoos.

The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan), announced over $5.5 million in PacifiCan funding for 17 projects in the Thompson Okanagan through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund and the Tourism Relief Fund.

Upgrading existing infrastructure and building new public assets will mean British Columbians will have better access to recreational programs and facilities; these projects will grow economic opportunities, create jobs, and improve community wellness.
The funding announcement builds on the recent openings of PacifiCan offices in Kelowna and Cranbrook that will help support local economic development for British Columbians in the Southern Interior.

Funding will go towards adding accessibility features to Pandosy Waterfront Park in Kelowna, including a floating dock, pedestrian lighting, wayfinding signage, and mobile infrastructure.

Funding will go towards building a new lake-to-lake bike route between Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake. The safe and dedicated cycling route and pedestrian sidewalk will allow easy public access across the city.

Funding will go towards the construction of two accessible community washrooms at Penticton’s Kiwanis Park Safety Village and Riverside Park.
City of Vernon
$639,000
Funding will be used for the continued development of Civic Memorial Park. Project activities include upgrading an existing building to improve energy efficiency and the creation of accessible public washrooms and a community meeting space.
City of West Kelowna
$416,250
Funding will go towards revitalizing four community parks in West Kelowna: Beechnut, Pritchard, Paula and Shetler Park. Upgrades include landscape and parking enhancements, and the installation of new playground equipment, volleyball courts and picnic areas.
District of Peachland
$53,188
Funding will be used to expand and improve the accessibility of multi-use pathways that link Heritage Park to downtown Peachland. Project activities include installing new streetlights, expanding the parking lot, and adding safe trail connections and crosswalks.
O’Keefe Ranch and interior Heritage Society

Funding will help create ten glamping accommodation units at the O’Keefe Ranch Historic Site in Vernon. The project will leverage green technology and improve accessibility for persons with disabilities.
Osoyoos Museum Society

Funding will go towards redeveloping the lower level of the Osoyoos Museum to include cultural artifact displays and multi-purpose work rooms to host community gatherings and events.

Travel Penticton is the Destination Marketing Organization for Penticton and area, charged with the task of providing destination marketing and awareness to potential travelers on a regional, provincial, national, and international level. Work closely with the City of Penticton and Penticton Indian Band to address and advocate for policies that have a significant impact on the tourism sector such as diversity, equality, accessibility, affordable housing, and community development.

Thompson Nicola Entrepreneurs Awarded Grants and Mentorships to Help Spark New Tourism Ideas
Three finalists who made winning pitches for the Thompson Nicola “Spark” Program were each awarded a $3,000 seed grant and mentorship to help them get started with their new tourism ideas.
KELOWNA, B.C. – Three finalists who made winning pitches for the Thompson Nicola “Spark” Program were each awarded a $3,000 seed grant and mentorship to help them get started with their new tourism ideas.
The Thompson Nicola “Spark” Program is presented by Destination British Columbia in collaboration with Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA), Tourism Valemount, Tourism Kamloops, Tourism Sun Peaks, Explore Gold Country, Tourism Wells Gray, and the Tourism Innovation Lab.
The program’s goal is to find, foster, and support new tourism ideas, experiences, and partnerships that will enhance current offerings, address gaps or challenges, motivate travel and longer stays, and increase year-round visits in the area.
Seven applications were received, with the top five being invited to present their new tourism ideas at the virtual Pitch Session held on December 1. Judge panels of local partner representatives and tourism innovators from outside the region selected the three winning applicants.

Partnership Helping to Fill Staffing Gaps in Hospitality and Tourism Industry
Like many industries, the hospitality and tourism sector has been hard hit by staff shortages over the past few years with a declining youth population and an aging workforce combining to create significant challenges.
But a new program designed in partnership by Okanagan College (OC) and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) will help to reduce those shortages.
The first of four new cohorts of students enrolled in the Hospitality Professional Program this fall, a flexible program open to students anywhere in the Thompson-Okanagan-Shuswap regions. The 17-week online course is followed by nine weeks of work experience in the students’ local community.
KELOWNA – Like many industries, the hospitality and tourism sector has been hard hit by staff shortages over the past few years with a declining youth population and an aging workforce combining to create significant challenges.
But a new program designed in partnership by Okanagan College (OC) and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) will help to reduce those shortages.
The first of four new cohorts of students enrolled in the Hospitality Professional Program in autumn 2022. This flexible program is open to students anywhere in the Thompson Okanagan region (including the Shuswap, Similkameen Valley, Boundary Country, and Nicola Valley). The 17-week online course is followed by nine weeks of work experience in the students’ local community.
“Okanagan College is leading the way by collaborating with industry partners to respond in areas where we have real needs in the workforce,” said Anne Kang, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Training. “This new program at Okanagan College supports our Future Ready Plan and shows how working together with the local industry can both support people who are looking for training to advance in their careers, and help businesses find much needed skilled workers.”
Students in Kelowna, Penticton, and Salmon Arm began their courses in the Hospitality Professional Program in October 2022. The online offering is accessible to students throughout the region while industry partnerships will take the training to a hands-on model for the work experience portion. The program will be offered three more times over the next two years.
“Since the classroom work can be done online and the work experience is completed in the students’ home community, this program is accessible to many people throughout our region. You don’t have to live in Kelowna to participate,” said Okanagan College President Neil Fassina. “Flexible learning options like the Hospitality Professional Program are critical as we respond to local and regional workforce needs.”
The Hospitality Professional Program bundles several existing Okanagan College courses together. Areas of study include computer skills, management and leadership training, and human resources, as well as industry certificates such as Serving It Right or FoodSafe, and two Okanagan College Certificates – Hospitality Service Training (HOST) and the Basic Accounting Certificate (BAC).
“We are very excited to be working closely with Okanagan College to help design this program and provide training opportunities to current and future tourism industry employees,” said Ellen Walker-Matthews, TOTA CEO. “This important partnership is an invaluable collaboration as the hospitality industry works to rebuild in a post-COVID world; attracting, retaining and retraining staff and building a robust workforce.”
According to a 2019 B.C. Tourism Human Resources Strategy document, the hospitality industry is facing unprecedented challenges in finding and keeping skilled workers. The report identified challenges within the industry including the reliance on workers between the ages of 15 and 24, the numbers of which are declining at a significant rate, combined with record numbers of people retiring.
“This program is designed to start people on a journey of a career, not just a job. When most people think about hospitality, we think front desk and housekeeping. But the need is and will continue to be much broader over the next few years,” said Danelle Greebe, OC’s Director of Continuing Studies. “The Hospitality Professional Program aims to meet the needs of the industry right now. We’re very excited to be able to partner with the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association to provide these courses.”

A team of University of Victoria Gustavson School of Business MBA students are conducting research to better understand sustainability concerns of the Thompson Okanagan tourism industry.
Wineries and cideries at all stages in their sustainability journey are invited to share their experiences in a 1-hour journey mapping interview.
The journey mapping interviews will focus on the experience of tourism operators from when they initially consider environmental sustainability services and products, through to the purchase (or not), service delivery, and outcomes and expectations.
Responses will support the BC Ministry of Tourism, Art, Culture, and Sport (MTACS)’s policy approach to environmental sustainability by providing an understanding of the experience of tourism operators in adopting environmental sustainability practices. The report will be shared with TOTA and other regional DMOs in B.C. in 2023.
Interview data will be anonymous and the process is governed by Gustavson School of Business’s Business Standards of Professional Behaviour.
Interviews must be completed by November 22, 2022.

The program enables TOTA to continuously work with tourism businesses to create a more resilient, healthy, and regenerative tourism industry in the region.

About Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)
As part of TOTA’s commitment to responsible tourism and sustainability, TOTA is seeking ways to improve access to clean energy for tourism companies in the region. One way of producing clean energy is by producing Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from organic wastes. RNG can be used in the same way as conventional natural gas, but it has a much lower, and sometimes negative, carbon footprint. Using renewable natural gas means that businesses can reduce their carbon footprint without having to change equipment and infrastructure. Making renewable natural gas requires an organic waste stream, such as from production businesses. An understanding of the types of organic waste and how accessible they are, is required in order to evaluate the viability of a RNG facility within the region.

The Naramata Centre is planning to offer a Hospitality & Viticulture Program to local employers for their seasonal employees. The Hospitality & Viticulture Program will provide personal and professional development opportunities to young employees in a community setting and provide much needed staff accommodation to business partners in the community.

Naramata Centre is considering to offer 7 to 14 rooms between mid-April through October of 2023 for program participants. Each room has two beds and an ensuite with a shared kitchen and lounge.
Naramata Centre is working with TOTA, WorkBC, and the Okanagan Collage to develop a variety of training opportunities in addition to the Centre’s own personal development and community offerings.

The 7 Celebrations - Reconnect in the Thompson Okanagan is an invitation to revisit the sights, sounds, people, and culture through a region-wide celebration set to take place now through March 2023. The festivals are set in various areas of the Thompson Okanagan, in the Shuswap, the North and South Okanagan, Boundary Country, North Thompson, and Gold Country.

Thompson Okanagan Part of International Network of Observatories Guiding Shift Towards More Sustainable and Resilient Tourism
Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA)'s Destination Development & Stewardship Specialist, Eve Layman, travelled to Madrid this past week to meet with the World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) and gain insights from more than 150 experts, with a focus on key topics including the shift towards a circular economy and reducing food waste across the sector.
Destinations around the world are reporting significant advances in sustainable tourism, with timely evidence and analytics serving as key tools for transformation as the sector’s recovery continues to get underway.
Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA)'s Destination Development & Stewardship Specialist, Eve Layman, travelled to Madrid this past week to meet with the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) and gain insights from more than 150 experts, with a focus on key topics including the shift towards a circular economy and reducing food waste across the sector.
In October 2019, TOTA became the first Canadian destination to join INSTO. Through a lengthy application process, destinations are required to meet the criteria outlined in the INSTO framework and commit to the ongoing monitoring and reporting of 9 core issue areas including Tourism Seasonality, Employment, Local Satisfaction, and Energy Management.
The global network of INSTO Observatories is pioneering and implementing, very often for the first time, catalytic activities designed to help the tourism sector implement sustainable development at the destination level. Together, they are leading the transformation of tourism by building on the principles of participatory approaches including all stakeholders to ensure an inclusive and resilient tourism development.
At the Global INSTO Meeting, destinations focused on how a timely and evidence-based approach is helping stimulate circular economy processes that result in using resources such as water and energy more efficiently. In addition, challenges in the environmental and social dimensions and the need for indicators that allow for comparability among destinations were highlighted.
Another topic was the availability of data from a growing variety of data-sources, making it increasingly difficult to process them into useful information needed for an informed decision- and policy- making process. It was agreed that all of these issues will be addressed in the INSTO Network through webinars and technical discussions.
While in Madrid, Eve Layman was also invited to meet with the Canadian Ambassador to Spain, H.E. Wendy Drukier. Eve presented her with a painting by Okanagan artist Alex Fong, as well as sharing the regional 7 Affirmations for 7 Generations Pledge and BeadTrails bead with the Ambassador and other guests.

A new program aimed at sparking and supporting innovative tourism ideas in the Thompson Nicola area of the Thompson Okanagan tourism region in British Columbia was officially announced by local and provincial tourism partners.
The “Spark” Mentorships & Grants Program will match selected applicants from the area with a tourism mentor and provide a $3,000 grant to supplement additional partner support, to help bring new tourism ideas to the next level of development.

KELOWNA, B.C. – A new program aimed at sparking and supporting innovative tourism ideas in the Thompson Nicola area of the Thompson Okanagan tourism region in British Columbia was officially announced today by local and provincial tourism partners.
The “Spark” Mentorships & Grants Program will match selected applicants from the area with a tourism mentor and provide a $3,000 grant to supplement additional partner support, to help bring new tourism ideas to the next level of development.
The goal is to find, foster, and support new tourism ideas, experiences, and partnerships that will enhance current offerings, address gaps or challenges, motivate travel and longer stays, and increase year-round visits.
Applications can be submitted from September 27 to November 4, 2022 and are encouraged from entrepreneurs, small businesses, and non-profit organizations based in the Thompson Nicola area including the communities of Kamloops, Sun Peaks, Valemount, Clearwater, Blue River, Merritt, Lytton, Cache Creek, Clinton, and surrounding areas. Following a review process, five finalists will be invited to a virtual Pitch Session where three winners will be selected.
The “Spark” Program will support businesses and entrepreneurs in the area to bring new tourism experiences to life, which will help visitors experience the Thompson Nicola, benefitting the local community and residents.
The “Spark” Program was first launched in Ontario in 2018 by the Tourism Innovation Lab and has expanded to several regions across British Columbia.

About Little Straw Vineyards
Little Straw Vineyard is a family-owned winery established in 1996. Wines vinted from the hot summer grapes of 1994 made up the first commercial releases. The winery is well known for the remarkably popular white blend “Tapestry” and for producing the only Auxerrois Icewine in Canada.
The majority of grapes come from their own vineyards situated on the lower slopes of Mount Boucherie in West Kelowna, British Columbia. Little Straw offers a wide range of small-lot wines, with something to appeal to almost every palate.
The winery is currently moving towards sustainability and organic.

The ownership changed at the end of 2021 to Karnail Singh Sidhu, who also owns Kalala Organic Estate Winery. Karnail has been always passionate about being organic, sustainable, and eco-friendly. Kalala Organic Estate Winery has been a part of the Biosphere Commitment Program for a while now, and shares the same values as Biosphere.
The central vision of the Little Straw is to be a leader in environmentally sustainable agri-tourism business in BC. Little Straw really values being environmentally sustainable, keeping the environment in mind with every business decision. For instance, the majority of organic waste from the winery is used in the vineyards as nutrient manure.
Little Straw proactively tries to get certified, especially regarding environmental sustainability. For instance, listing certified organic and Biosphere Committed Company logos will stimulate the wine and agriculture industries and consumers.
The new owners have big plans for Little Straw. Joining the Biosphere Commitment Program will be one of the first steps they take for sustainability. The winery is also in the process to become certified organic, which takes approximately three years.
