Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and TOTA partner to benefit students in TRU’s tourism management program and support the TRU Tourism Innovation Lab
Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to benefit students in TRU’s tourism management program and support the TRU Tourism Innovation Lab.
KAMLOOPS – Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to benefit students in TRU’s tourism management program and support the TRU Tourism Innovation Lab.
The partnership prioritizes collaboration between TRU and TOTA to support students entering the tourism field through learning resources and opportunities, industry mentorship and referrals. TOTA’s support for the TRU Tourism Innovation Lab also fuels business development in the tourism sector.
“I am thrilled to affirm our commitment to fostering the next generation of tourism leaders through our partnership with Thompson Rivers University. Together, we are empowering students with invaluable resources, mentorship and opportunities to innovate within the dynamic tourism sector. This collaboration not only enriches the educational experience but also fuels entrepreneurial spirit, driving forward the future of tourism in our region,” said Ellen Walker-Matthews, CEO of TOTA.
TRU, in partnership with Tourism Kamloops and the Kamloops Innovation Centre, launched the TRU Tourism Innovation Lab in February 2020. The entrepreneurship program leverages an existing tourism management course at the university and supports students to develop an innovative tourism product through research and industry mentorship.
Students can further develop their business ideas through the Tourism Venture Acceleration Program with support from the TRU Generator and Kamloops Innovation Centre to produce market-ready tourism products that fill current gaps.
“Industry partnership is critical to the success of our program, students and alumni because it keeps education up to speed with market activity and gaps, especially in BC,” said David Carter, assistant teaching professor and director of the Tourism Innovation Lab. “Our partnership with TOTA ensures students have access to resources that are current and reflect the state of the industry today.”

Additionally, TOTA has renewed funding for the Tourism Excellence Award first established in 2014 to provide a $1,500 annual scholarship for the top academic student on the Bachelor of Tourism Management Program.

The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) announced a line-up of seven diverse and dazzling events to officially commemorate the reopening of the Thompson Okanagan region post-pandemic, and to celebrate its people and cultures. The 7 Celebrations - Reconnect in the Thompson Okanagan is an invitation to revisit the sights, sounds, people, and culture through a region-wide celebration set to take place now through March 2023. Highlights include live performances; a welcome home to the sockeye salmon; a winter season kick off with the Fire & Ice Light Up; the legend and lore of the lake; a Winter Carnival; a celebration of women in sport and mountain culture; a visit to Gold Country’s roots; and a celebration of local products and businesses.
The series 7 Celebrations was named to pay tribute to one of TOTA’s core mandates - the 7 Affirmations for 7 Generations Thompson Okanagan Pledge. This pledge was inspired by the Indigenous philosophy that recognizes the “actions made today have a lasting impact for the seven generations that follow.” In the spirit of invested and purposeful travel, the series focuses on the traditions, stories, and cultures of a selection of the region’s communities in an effort to give them life for years to come. Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association Supports Women of Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality through Sponsorship of Empower Her Event by WORTH Association
The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) has signed on as a Bronze Sponsor for the Empower Her series of events, organized by the Women of Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality (WORTH) Association.
Empower Her is WORTH’s signature networking and panel discussion event for women in hospitality and tourism. WORTH is hosting the fifth edition of the event in 2022 and 2023 to educate, elevate, and empower women in the industry - and first in the Thompson Okanagan region.

New Program Aims to "Spark" Innovative Tourism Ideas in Thompson Nicola
A new program aimed at sparking and supporting innovative tourism ideas in the Thompson Nicola area of the Thompson Okanagan tourism region in British Columbia was officially announced by local and provincial tourism partners.
The “Spark” Mentorships & Grants Program will match selected applicants from the area with a tourism mentor and provide a $3,000 grant to supplement additional partner support, to help bring new tourism ideas to the next level of development.

KELOWNA, B.C. – A new program aimed at sparking and supporting innovative tourism ideas in the Thompson Nicola area of the Thompson Okanagan tourism region in British Columbia was officially announced today by local and provincial tourism partners.
The “Spark” Mentorships & Grants Program will match selected applicants from the area with a tourism mentor and provide a $3,000 grant to supplement additional partner support, to help bring new tourism ideas to the next level of development.
The goal is to find, foster, and support new tourism ideas, experiences, and partnerships that will enhance current offerings, address gaps or challenges, motivate travel and longer stays, and increase year-round visits.
Applications can be submitted from September 27 to November 4, 2022 and are encouraged from entrepreneurs, small businesses, and non-profit organizations based in the Thompson Nicola area including the communities of Kamloops, Sun Peaks, Valemount, Clearwater, Blue River, Merritt, Lytton, Cache Creek, Clinton, and surrounding areas. Following a review process, five finalists will be invited to a virtual Pitch Session where three winners will be selected.
The “Spark” Program will support businesses and entrepreneurs in the area to bring new tourism experiences to life, which will help visitors experience the Thompson Nicola, benefitting the local community and residents.
The “Spark” Program was first launched in Ontario in 2018 by the Tourism Innovation Lab and has expanded to several regions across British Columbia.

Thompson Okanagan Tourism Board of Directors Working On Moving Tourism Forward
The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) Board of Directors and Senior Staff members of the Association met this week to discuss the challenges the tourism industry has faced and continues to deal with and how best to move forward.
(Kelowna, B.C.) June 9, 2022 - The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) Board of Directors and Senior Staff members of the association met on June 8, 2022 at the Summerland Waterfront Resort for their first in-person board meeting since October 2021 and only their second in-person meeting since February 2020.
"While the board has continued to meet virtually and work tirelessly over the past two years, nothing can replace the dynamics and creativity of face-to-face dialogue," said TOTA Board Chair Michael J. Ballingall.
"The challenges the tourism industry has faced and continues to deal with are immense and will take innovation, collaboration, and partnership to help deal with post-pandemic recovery, supply shortages, and labour challenges. It has never been more important to come together to build a resilient and sustainable industry," said Ballingall. "We have to recognize that things are not going back to "how they once were" nor, in fact, do we want them to. We must incorporate a new way of thinking to build forward and better for the long term."
TOTA has been a leader in encouraging the implementation of sustainability plans and practices since the release of its 10-year Regional Strategy "Embracing Our Potential" in 2012. In 2017, the Thompson Okanagan region became the first Biosphere Certified Destination in the Americas, a program that is part of the Responsible Tourism Institute and built around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Since then, the other regions that form the British Columbia Regional Tourism Secretariat (BCRTS) including Kootenay Rockies Tourism, Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism, Northern BC Tourism and 4VI (previously Tourism Vancouver Island) have all become Biosphere Certified Destinations, as well as Destination Greater Victoria.

TOTA Launches Community Well-Being Survey on International Day of Happiness
The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) launched a Community Well-Being Survey, on the International Day of Happiness, March 20, 2022. The survey, a partnership with Planet Happiness (a project of the Happiness Alliance), is meant to strengthen the relationship between the tourism industry and residents of the Thompson Okanagan region of British Columbia.
Thompson Okanagan residents, including tourism professionals, are invited to complete the survey. Once completed you will receive a personal report highlighting your results compared to the average results of other residents in the region.
Individuals and companies are encouraged to share the survey with team members and communities. To make sharing easy, TOTA has prepared a Media Kit with sample promotion materials for email and social media.

People make a great destination and a great destination contributes to the well-being of its people.

British Columbia Tourism Resiliency Network Wins BC Tourism & Hospitality Award for Community Contribution
The British Columbia Tourism Resiliency Network (BCTRN) has been recognized with the award for Community Contribution & Impact at the 2022 BC Tourism & Hospitality Conference, for demonstrating social responsibility through efforts to enhance social and cultural impact, fostering collaboration, and building resiliency in communities.
The BC Tourism Resiliency Network has helped 2,033 tourism businesses to date, including 158 Indigenous-owned, 440 women-owned, and 6 youth-owned businesses in communities spanning the province.
As one of the partners, TOTA supported over 970 Thompson Okanagan tourism companies through the regional Tourism Resiliency Program.

Evolving from a program initiated by Tourism Vancouver Island shortly after the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the British Columbia Tourism Resiliency Network is a long-term resiliency program led by the British Columbia Regional Tourism Secretariat (BCRTS), providing B.C. tourism businesses with meaningful, one-on-one support to navigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, adapt, and work towards eventual recovery.
The British Columbia Tourism Resiliency Network has helped 2,033 tourism businesses to date, including 158 Indigenous-owned, 440 women-owned, and six youth-owned businesses in communities spanning the province. 1,333 participants have successfully secured aid from government relief programs and an estimated 3,694 jobs have been preserved.
“By working together across the province, the British Columbia Regional Tourism Secretariat is maximizing our collective expertise and resources, and leveraging the local knowledge and long-standing relationships we’ve held with stakeholders in our five regions for over 50 years,” said Ellen Walker-Matthews, CEO, Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, and Treasurer, British Columbia Regional Tourism Secretariat. “The British Columbia Tourism Resiliency Network provided a vehicle for us to work together like never before and allowed the development of infrastructure that can be repurposed into managing other crises, but also future partnerships for the betterment of B.C.’s tourism industry.”

As part of the partnership, bookeco will feature the Thompson Okanagan as a sustainable destination.
Thompson Okanagan tourism businesses who demonstrate sustainable practices will have the opportunity to be featured on the bookeco website. TOTA Biosphere Committed Companies will receive up to 4 months free when they sign up for the bookeco Advantage Plan.
The partnership agreement will also include a series of projects to promote sustainable tourism and responsible tourism providers through email and social media initiatives.

bookeco is an online platform that connects people to eco-friendly places to stay, things to do, and places to eat and drink. Launched in November of 2021 with an initial focus on the Canadian market, bookeco already has over 1,200 sustainability focused businesses listed on its platform and boasts a rapidly growing eco-conscious customer base. As a map-based platform, bookeco also gives the added advantage of highlighting eco-friendly businesses that are local to users.
bookeco is helping to rebuild the tourism industry by implementing a subscription based model to save sustainability focused businesses on high third party booking fees, and giving businesses the option to drive customers directly to their website. bookeco is focused on helping the tourism industry fight climate change through sustainability, which includes planting trees for every booking made.

The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) has joined with Green Wine Future (GWF) as one of its corporate sponsors and strategic partners. The event is the most ambitious environmental conference ever organized for the wine community and will launch as a fully online gathering May 23-26, 2022.
Miami, Florida, USA - The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA), to show its commitment to protecting the environment and sustainability, has joined with Green Wine Future (GWF) as one of its corporate sponsors and strategic partners. The event is the most ambitious environmental conference ever organized for the wine community and will launch as a fully online gathering May 23-26, 2022.
“Because Green Wine Future is an international summit which will be broadcast around the globe and from eight different time zones, we will be able to show the entire planet, why and how the Thompson Okanagan region of British Columbia, Canada became the first destination in the Americas to successfully achieve the Biosphere Certified designation distinction from the Responsible Tourism Institute,” said Ellen Walker-Matthews, CEO for TOTA.

Recorded and presented by GWF and W4P founder Pancho Campo and his team from the above listed regions, W4P will stream free globally during regular breaks of GWF. Documentaries will be available through Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram, where the team will highlight wine tastings in Greenland, Iceland, Antarctica, the Amazon, and the Great Coral Reef.
As part of these documentaries, Pancho will travel to the Thompson Okanagan region of British Columbia at the beginning of April to record a documentary that will showcase the region’s wine industry, sustainable tourism commitments, and environmentally friendly strategies and initiatives that are being undertaken as part of the provincial focus to address the global climate crisis.

The no-cost event for tourism businesses is a collaboration between the five regional destination management organizations of the British Columbia Regional Tourism Secretariat (BCRTS) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The event will feature more than 40 tourism experts who will share their global, regional, and local expertise.

The BCRTS and its five regional associations have a decades-long relationships with tourism operators who are represented in Northern BC, the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast, the Thompson Okanagan, the Kootenay Rockies, and Vancouver Island. For much of the past two years, a large part of their focus has been on supporting businesses manage their way through the pandemic – while also collaborating to stage events such as this that are aimed at creating an even stronger tourism industry in this province.
“As we create a path forward, we have both an opportunity and a duty to address issues of climate change and the environmental impacts of our industry - as individual businesses, communities and regions,” said BCRTS Chair Anthony Everett. “We have an opportunity to support and celebrate Indigenous cultures through tourism and take steps to demonstrate our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. And, as we chart a future course, we must remain cognizant of how tourism impacts residents in our communities.”
Marsha Walden (President and CEO of Destination Canada), Walt Judas (CEO of Tourism Industry Association of BC), and Richard Porges (CEO of Destination BC) will speak to Shaping the Future of Tourism and how their organizations are charting a path forward.
Other panel discussions will include: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Tourism which emphasizes how to foster a visitor economy that represents a wide variety of individuals at all levels; Tourism Operators Creating a Positive Net Impact which will focus on innovative programs and approaches that BC operators have adopted to create a better tomorrow; Truth, then Reconciliation, exploring how storytelling and truth telling in tourism can support Canadians and visitors alike to gain a better understanding of Indigenous history and move towards authentic reconciliation; and, Access for All, will emphasize the need to create opportunities for people of all abilities, both within the sector and as guests.
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council will also facilitate a series of workshops where participants will learn how tourism-related emissions can be measured effectively and be taken into consideration when planning tourist activities; how destination management organizations can better engage the private sector and drive sustainability certification; and learn about strategies for visitor management in natural areas.

The more user friendly, interactive Rail Trails website was launched on June 15th to provide a hub of information pertaining to rail trails.
Kelowna, B.C. - The updated B.C. Rail Trails website was launched on June 15th. After incorporating stakeholder feedback and improving the usability of the site, you will now find a more user friendly platform with updated accessibility information, interactive maps and quiz, and finally announcement boxes to inform users of trail maintenance.

The Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail and the Columbia & Western Rail Trail is the longest rail trail network in British Columbia extending from Hope to Castlegar. This website was created with the intent to streamline the planning of a bike ride or trip along this trail network.
“Many of our residents and visitors alike don’t realize how long and accessible the Rail Trails really are. The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) has teamed up with the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, BC to provide job readiness training for Thompson Okanagan residents through a new, free certificate program.
Victoria, British Columbia (Jan 28 , 2021) – The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) has teamed up with the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, BC to provide job readiness training for Thompson Okanagan residents through a new, free certificate program.
In this fully funded, online learning program, participants will receive instruction, mentorship, employment coaching, and job placement support delivered full-time over 13 weeks. The new Thompson Okanagan Tourism Skills Training Program will prepare participants to work within all areas of the tourism and hospitality industry. Blending live virtual learning sessions and self-led online industry certificate programs, the program covers the changing landscape of the tourism industry, with featured guest speakers and virtual tours to connect participants to the typically dynamic and growing Thompson Okanagan tourism industry.
“During this unfortunate tourism slowdown, this is a great opportunity for tourism workers to upskill,” said Saul Klein, Dean of the Gustavson School of Business. “We are proud to be partnering with the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association to help provide opportunities for those working in industries hard-hit by the pandemic.”
“Once we are finally in the recovery stage of tourism opening up once again across the Thompson Okanagan, we know that labour will be in high demand,” said Ellen Walker-Matthews, TOTA Sr. Vice President and Acting CEO . “We hope people see this as a tremendous opportunity to learn about the many career opportunities in the tourism industry that are available today and for the future.”
Developed in response to the decline of international tourism and the increase in domestic tourism in 2021, this program will support people whose jobs have been impacted by COVID-19, as well as help Thompson Okanagan businesses capitalize on domestic tourism through skills development for the region’s tourism labour force.
The program hopes to attract new Canadians, persons with disabilities and Indigenous people. Workers over 55 years of age are also encouraged to apply. Applicants also must be currently unemployed or precariously employed (casual, seasonal, or part-time). The application deadline is February 3, 2021, with classes held February 8 to May 5, 2021. Up to 60 students will be accommodated, with a second similar program being planned for March. With the considerable combined experience and expertise of both parties, the focus of this partnership will be supporting the Thompson Okanagan region and global community through the development of new approaches, destination management strategies, tools, and knowledge products.

The World Travel Awards is the international benchmark for recognizing excellence in the travel industry, with voting conducted by industry professionals from around the globe.
The concept of "responsible tourism" has gained new meaning this year and, alongside continued sustainability efforts, TOTA pivoted resources to support local tourism businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic by providing one-on-one support, training, education, and advocacy through the Tourism Resiliency Program.
"It has been a truly challenging year for the travel and tourism industry. Through new trials and tribulations, the well-being and resiliency of our natural, social, and cultural environment remains at the core of our efforts," said Mandziuk. "The tourism operators of the Thompson Okanagan region have displayed impressive resiliency."
The Thompson Okanagan looks forward to welcoming and hosting the World Travel Awards North America Gala Ceremony at Predator Ridge Resort in Vernon this Autumn 2021, marking the first time that the World Travel Awards will be hosted in Canada. The 2020 World Travel Awards were planned to take place in the Thompson Okanagan in November 2020, however were moved to a virtual stage due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

TOTA Joins Forces with Planet Happiness and Thompson Rivers University to Measure Happiness and Well-Being of Thompson Okanagan Residents
Strengthening our understanding of the impact of tourism on the well-being of communities, use of the Happiness Index survey aims to demonstrate that measuring destination well-being and happiness is as important as tracking profits and visitor arrivals and supports responsible destination management.
Kelowna, BC (October 06, 2020) - The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA), Planet Happiness, and Thompson Rivers University (TRU) have formed a long-term partnership to measure the happiness and well-being of residents and communities within the Thompson Okanagan region through the Happiness Index survey. Strengthening our understanding of the impact of tourism on the well-being of communities, use of the Happiness Index survey aims to demonstrate that measuring destination well-being and happiness is as important as tracking profits and visitor arrivals and supports responsible destination management.
"The long-term viability of destinations depends on tourism improving the quality of life of local communities. Over time, the Happiness Index will help measure how well this is being done by engaging with residents directly," said Glenn Mandziuk, President and CEO of TOTA. "These findings will assist TOTA in assessing how the region is meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, as well as inform our ongoing efforts toward tourism recovery and resiliency."
Planet Happiness works with tourism organizations and universities, such as TOTA and TRU, to deploy the Happiness Index and focus the attention of everyone involved on using tourism to improve the quality of life in tourism destinations.
“We support destinations to move beyond the narrow tourism dollar and GDP agenda. TOTA is promoting sustainable and quality tourism objectives in the region. The Happiness Index is well established as part of a global initiative to measure well-being in tourism destinations linked to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with partners in 14 tourism destinations across ten countries. Indicators include satisfaction with life, access to nature and arts, community engagement, standard of living, life-long learning, and health. The Thompson Okanagan region includes Mount Robson Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies. The Thompson Okanagan region is the first Planet Happiness partnership in Canada.
"Planet Happiness will support TRU and TOTA by deploying what is perhaps the most progressive, adaptable, and easy to use Happiness Index survey on the planet," said Laura Musikanski, author, lawyer, and co-founder of Planet Happiness, a project of the Happiness Alliance.
TRU tourism faculty member Dr. John Hull will assist with the project in the Thompson Okanagan region.

Kelowna, BC (September 25, 2020) - The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) has partnered with the Strong Universal Network (SUNx), to develop resilient, Climate Friendly Travel, in alignment with the Paris 1.5 Trajectory and the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Today, during Climate Week NYC 2020, TOTA, SUNx Malta, and the World Travel and Tourism Council announced the launch of the global Climate Friendly Travel Registry for 2050 Climate Neutral & Sustainability Ambitions, as well as the Maurice Strong Climate Friendly Travel Youth Summit.
"Reducing carbon emissions is not an option, it is a necessity," said Glenn Mandziuk, President and CEO of TOTA. "We are all understanding the tremendous threat that Climate Change is to the world and are honored to partner with SUNx as a charter member of the Climate Friendly Travel Registry for 2050."
The Climate Friendly Travel Registry for 2050 Climate Neutral & Sustainability Ambitions is linked to the UNFCCC Climate Action Portal and is open to all Travel and Tourism companies and communities, anywhere in the world. The idea of a Climate Neutral Ambitions Registry was built into the Paris Agreement as a way for businesses to transparently declare and progressively increase their carbon reduction ambitions through 2050, with the greater mission of stabilizing global temperatures at tolerable levels for human survival.

TOTA and go2HR Partner to Support Businesses on Occupational Health & Safety Through COVID-19 Pandemic
The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) and go2HR are supporting Biosphere Committed Companies in the region with resources for occupational health and safety, including enhancements specifically pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kelowna, BC (July 31, 2020) - The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) and go2HR are supporting Biosphere Committed Companies in the region with resources for occupational health and safety, including enhancements specifically pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of the Biosphere Commitment Program, go2HR provides Biosphere Committed Companies with added value through the go2HR Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Biosphere Framework. The go2HR OHS Framework offers a roadmap for participating organizations to help them establish and maintain an effective health and safety program. Eligible businesses may choose to progress to the Certificate of Recognition (COR) program, a voluntary audit and incentive program.
"In the midst of a global Pandemic, occupational health and safety are of immeasurable importance for industry and community resiliency. Our partnership with go2HR has been of great value to businesses aligned with the Biosphere Adhesion Initiative," said Glenn Mandziuk, TOTA President and CEO. Eco Efficiency Program: TOTA Partners with FortisBC, GreenStep Solutions, and BC Hotel Association to Help Tourism Businesses Cut Costs

The Eco Efficiency Program will Provide One-On-One Support to Aid Economic Recovery Through Resource Conservation
Kelowna, BC (July 9, 2020) - The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) is working in partnership with FortisBC, GreenStep Solutions, and the BC Hotel Association to reduce costs for tourism businesses and aid economic recovery within the Thompson Okanagan region. The overarching goal of our partnership is to support regional tourism businesses by identifying operational inefficiencies, providing tools to address them, and ultimately reducing utility bills. As our industry continues to show incredible resiliency, this program is providing timely support to reduce costs and build a foundation for future utility savings and resource conservation.
A dedicated Energy Analyst, employed by TOTA and funded through FortisBC, will act as a technical resource and energy advocate for tourism stakeholders. The Energy Analyst will work closely with TOTA’s Destination Stewardship Team and GreenStep’s Business Advisors to implement the Eco Efficiency Program, which will include an onsite assessment and analysis of utility bill data. The Eco Efficiency Program will provide businesses with a detailed understanding of utility usage patterns and equipment performance and includes:
Energy consumption analysis, reporting and rebate opportunities;
Water consumption analysis and reporting;
Waste analysis and reporting, and;
Carbon software training and access to a carbon measurement platform to effectively measure your organization's carbon footprint.

The tourism industry has been one of the hardest hit as a result of COVID-19, and experts agree that a green economic recovery will help businesses to save money while also meeting important environmental goals," said Angela Nagy, CEO of GreenStep Solutions. "We are thrilled to be partnering on this exciting initiative to help businesses identify opportunities to reduce both their costs and their eco footprint."

As a Regional Destination Management Organization, TOTA has committed to long term responsible tourism management as a Biosphere Certified Gold Destination and also the measurement of sustainable practices through the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO).
Biosphere Committed companies who are interested in the full Eco Efficiency assessment will receive priority in the first phase of the program. Businesses that are not interested to join the Biosphere Commitment Program at this time and are only seeking an energy assessment can express their interest for a virtual energy-only assessment delivered by TOTA’s Energy Analyst. They will receive a detailed analysis of energy utility data benchmarking against similar properties in Canada, a report summarizing cost saving opportunities, and energy efficiency measures with a list of rebates and incentives available.
The BC Hotel Association is also offering the services of their dedicated Energy Analyst to conduct energy-only assessments for their members.
Through this partnership, regional tourism utility consumption data will also be collected and aggregated to share with the expanded monitoring programs TOTA has committed to, including the Biosphere Destination Gold Certification, the Biosphere Commitment Program, and our newly formed partnership with the United Nations World Tourism Organization as a Sustainable Tourism Observatory. This data will assist in achieving TOTA's goal of developing financial and environmental sustainability for the regional tourism industry.
