Why Tourism Matters
From April 7-11, 2025, we celebrated National Tourism Week in Canada. A pivotal time to recognize the profound importance of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry to
our economy. This sector plays a crucial role in showcasing our culture and
history, enhancing our overall well-being, and fostering community economic
development.
Although tourism and hospitality are often overshadowed by more easily defined
industries, their contributions to communities—both large and small—are immense
and ongoing. The tourism industry in BC generated $22.1 billion in annual revenue in 2023 and $9.7 billion to BC’s GDP in 2023, higher than any other primary resource industry. With over 16,900 tourism-related businesses in BC in 2023, the industry employed 125,700 people, a +7.9% increase over 2022. As mentioned at a Tourism Week event we attended this past week in Kamloops, "Tourism means Business," and big business at that.
As noted in a recent interview with CBC's "Standing Still" hosted by Jonny Harris, who travels Canada extensively himself, residents consistently share how communities have turned to and relied on the tourism industry during challenging times, such as when businesses from key sectors like, mills or mines shut. Further highlighting the tourism industry's resilience and importance.
While tourism certainly bolsters our economies, its true value lies in its ability to narrate our authentic stories, bring incredible Canadian experiences to life, educate and inspire, and connect with visitors to communicate who we are and what we believe. Through tourism, we can share the richness of our diverse heritage and foster connections that transcend borders.
