Vernon’s SilverStar Mountain has been recognized as one of the top ski resorts in North America for environmental performance.
The Star was the only Canadian resort to receive a nomination for the 2019 Golden Eagle Award for Environmental Excellence from the National Ski Areas Association.
Silver Star was up against U.S. giants Vail Resorts, Colorado, Sun Valley Resort, Idaho and Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, Mass.
Vail Resorts won the overall award, handed out May 1 in San Diego, along with awards in sustainability, safety, growth and marketing.
“Although we didn’t win the award this time around, we are honoured to be recognized for all our environmental efforts on an international scale,” Silver Star spokesperson Chantelle Deacon said.
The resort doesn’t use snowmakers, which reduces water, fuel and electricity use, has water-reduction efforts throughout the resort, low-emission groomers and sleds as well as free shuttle services to reduce emissions.
