British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards Judges Announced

September 27th

July 17, 2018:  After what seemed like a never-ending winter, and a hardly-there spring, we welcomed summer with open arms! With high temperatures and lots of sunshine, the fruits of the Valley begin to reach their peaks, as the busy tourism season continues.

While summer may have just started, the Okanagan Wine Festivals Society is busy planning for the 38th Annual Fall Okanagan Wine Festival, kicking off with British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards – which will be held on Thursday, September 27th. But before this exciting evening will commence, the judging must begin! This year’s esteemed panel of professionals bring experience from across Canada, as well as from the Pacific Northwest in the United States.

The British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards replaced the Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in B.C. Wine and the B.C. Wine Awards. Earlier this year, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, with support from the Government House Foundation, and The Okanagan Wine Festivals Society announced a new partnership in recognizing the best of British Columbia wines with the creation of the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards.

The competition, presented by Farm Credit Canada, ContainerWorld and TricorBraun Winepak, is open to all licensed British Columbia wineries and will include fruit wines and mead. Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals will be awarded. The top 1% of medal winners will receive Lieutenant Governor’s platinum medals, with one wine receiving the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Best Wine in British Columbia.

This year’s wine entries will face the following acclaimed judges:

  • Anthony Gismondi – Vancouver, British Columbia
  • John Schreiner – Vancouver, British Columbia
  • DJ Kearney – Vancouver, British Columbia
  • David Lawrason – Toronto, Ontario
  • Alistair Veen – Surrey, British Columbia
  • Janet Dorozynski – Ottawa, Ontario
  • Brent Muller – Victoria, British Columbia
  • Julianna Hayes – Kelowna, British Columbia
  • Troy Townsin – Victoria, British Columbia
  • Sid Cross – Vancouver, British Columbia
  • Eric Degerman – Kennewick, Washington
  • Ben MacPhee-Sigurdson – Winnipeg, Manitoba

Individual judge bios can be found here.

Mark your calendars! Wine entries for the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor’s Wine Awards will open on July 17th, 2018 and remain open until Monday, August 27th, 2018 at 5:00 pm PST.
