On Friday, December 1, the community of Big White Ski Resort welcomed the start of winter with a very special celebration that included a 30ft. bonfire and the highest altitude Drive-In movie in Canada.
After another beautiful day on the slopes, blasting through Big White’s 111cm alpine base of fresh powder, families gathered in the Happy Valley car park, after dark, to huddle beside a roaring bonfire that climbed nearly 30ft. into the starry night sky. To the delight of young spectators, the Big White Fire Department and its fleet of fire engines were on-site in full uniform to manage the burn.
“The Big White Fire Department is a special part of what makes Big White an amazing place,” says Barb Chadwick-Fritsch, Big White Village community member. “I am proud to live and work at the resort because I come from a small town where events such as this promote the values of why I live here. To see families enjoying what Big White has to offer is what brings a community together.”
This event was more than just a celebration of winter; it was a celebration of community. More than 200 Kelowna locals and Big White Village residents alike came together for this special event.
After a dazzling display of fireworks, families bundled together in their cars and flicked on their FM radios to tune into Frozen – a Drive-In movie displayed on Big White’s new 25ft. inflatable movie screen.
“We are really excited about offering Drive-In movies here at Big White Ski Resort. It’s a truly unique experience that you won’t get anywhere else in the world this winter,” says Bethan Wetheral, guest services manager for Big White Ski Resort. “It’s a perfect evening for our guests and locals alike.”
As Canada’s favourite family resort, Big White is always looking for ways to take its resort experience to the next level. Big White Ski Resort’s inflatable movie screen, purchased in partnership with the Big White Community Development Association, is an exciting new resort development that will be used in both its summer and winter programs for events such as the Village Movie Series and the Movie on the Mountain Series (which takes place throughout the summer).
“We knew when we bought the giant inflatable movie screen it would be great for summer alpine movies, never did we think it would be so popular in the winter,” said Michael J. Ballingall, senior vice president of sales & marketing for Big White Ski Resort. “This is now going to be a great addition to the Big White winter offerings.”
