The finishing touches are complete. Penticton Lakeside Resort’s new West Wing officially roomed its first guests on June 30th of this year with minor details unfinished. Throughout the busy summer, guests from around the world experienced first hand a wood primary hotel. Now that the summer is behind us, the small but important details that add character have been completed and we are pleased to say that our vision and dream has now become a reality.
The six storey structure features 70 king bed rooms, 20 of which are suites. The major trademark being the mass timber construction with other eye-catching features including the grand atrium and staircase, large patios, floor to ceiling glass windows, and local art displayed throughout.
The glulam beams, columns and cross-laminated panels were built and supplied by local company Structurlam, one of only four manufacturers of CLT in North America. Designed by HDR|CEI Architecture Associates Inc., and built by Greyback Construction Ltd., great care was taken to emphasize and highlight the wood structure which also functions as the finish throughout the building. In partnership with these high profile companies, the West Wing recently was nominated and won the Hospitality Award of Excellence at the prestigious Thompson-Okanagan-Kootenay Commercial Building Awards. Wood is featured on the exposed ceilings, patio partitions, interior corridors, and the grand atrium and staircase.
Vision, planning, and design was a result of:
- The demands of visitors wishing for luxury accommodations in Penticton
- The desire to showcase the strength and beauty of sustainable building materials such as mass timber
- The want to bring awareness of British Columbia’s Wood First Initiative and the impact building with wood has on the environment
- The required on-site rooms to accommodate the additional conference space set to open Spring 2018
Later this month a very special piece will be added to the West Wing. A private event and plaque presentation will be held in remembrance of Nick Bevanda, Vice President & Design Principal, HDR|CEI Architecture Associates Inc., who was the lead design architect and managing principal for the project and long standing friend of the Penticton Lakeside Resort.
