Now in its twelfth year, the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA is pleased to present the Power of
Being a Girl Conference, taking place on Wednesday, October 18th, 2017. This is a one-day
conference – designed by girls for girls aged twelve to fourteen years old – to explore the
challenges of growing up, in a fun and empowering way. Girls are powerful and this year’s
inspiring workshop choices, allow participants to explore the healthy ways they can find, keep, and share that power. PBG includes a full day of fun, lunch, prizes, and two workshop choices, ranging from:
CONSCIOUS GIRL: SOCIAL MEDIA BUSTING WORKSHOP
Come explore how social media influences how we see ourselves. Focusing on Instagram,
Facebook and Snapchat, girls will discuss the psychology surrounding “likes” and the potential damaging impacts not getting likes can have on someone and where that is possibly rooted. Girls will be a part of a Power of Being a Girl photo campaign as well. There will be discussion around the messaging of “Okay, this is happening. Let’s use this as a tool to empower us and send a greater message” to help give girls a voice and be a part of something bigger themselves.
UNIQUE GIRL: HATS OF INDIVIDUALITY WORKSHOP
Using the artistic medium of creative hat design, girls will be invited to explore identity and self-awareness through an examination of all the ways we express our individuality. This insightful art project will allow for not only creative outlet, but a reflection of self when creating the hats. At the culmination of the workshop, girls will be encouraged to showcase their creations and to explain the ideas, thoughts, and feelings around the hats.
EMPOWERED GIRL: THEATRE GAMES AND DECISION MAKING WORKSHOP
Girls will be invited to identify strategies for empowered positive decision making in the face of peer and other social pressures. Theatre games will be used to identify and challenge negative peer pressures, establish personal boundaries, and explore personal supports: in order to set the stage for positive interactions and empowered decision making.
DYNAMIC GIRL: STRONG BY ZUMBA WORKSHOP
Unite. Empower. Inspire. Girls will challenge themselves to think stronger and get stronger in this workshop. This is a super fun and motivational workout that is synced with music to inspire girls to see how strong their wonderful bodies can be. Discover the energy and potential in every girl and unleash their person through exercise, education, and empowerment. Its about smiling, having fun, and using yoga and empowerment with a high aerobic workout, while talking about self-image.
INSPIRED GIRL: GENDERBREAD BUILDING WORKSHOP
This workshop will focus on helping girls understand the complexity and fluidity of gender. Girls will explore gender identity and gender expression, to better understand the labels that have been reinforced in society. Discussions around their current understandings of gender, how it is imposed, and language that limits that understanding will occur. Girls will learn through fun group activities throughout the session.
With even more fun and education components than previous years, the YMCA-YWCA
Violence Against Women and Support Services offers this full day conference at no cost to the girls who attend during the YWCA Canada’s Week Without Violence, simultaneously happening from October 16th to 22nd, 2017.
