An Oliver winery has been named the #1 Winery in British Columbia at the National Wine Awards of Canada (NWAC).
Road 13 Vineyards, located on the Golden Mile Bench, took home 13 awards and was named fourth on the top ten wineries in Canada.
“We are very proud to have been recognized for the ninth year in a row as one of the Top 10 Wineries in Canada and are thrilled to be crowned the #1 Winery in B.C.,” said Joe Luckhurst, general manager. “This wouldn’t be possible without all the efforts of our exceptional composition of winemakers, the cellar team, vineyard staff and the many people who have made this dream possible since we began in 2003. With a special tribute to our terroir – the ‘dirt’ that defines and drives the incredible wines we are able to create.”
This year’s National Wine Awards received 1,700 entries from 242 different wineries. Road 13 Vineyard was awarded platinum for the 2014 Similkameen Collective GSM – a red blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre.
Among many of the larger wineries in the Okanagan there are many smaller ones gaining national recognition.
The National wine awards created a category for small wineries which is for wineries producing less than 10,000 cases. The top three wineries in Canada in the small winery category were La Frenz Estate Winery, Meyer Family Vineyards and Lake Breeze Vineyards.
Smaller wineries produce a smaller number of wines, forcing them to submit fewer wines to the competition.
All three of these wineries were also in the top 16 wineries in Canada overall and all three were in the top ten overall B.C. wineries.
Other Okanagan wineries in the top twenty in Canada are:
- Road 13 Vineyard (4)
- Mission Hill Family Estate (5)
- Quails’ Gate Estate Winery (6)
- Burrowing Owl Estate Winery (7)
- La Frenz Estate Winery (10) – Best small winery
