Feast for the Eyes
……. a gathering of friends and a gathering of the curious. It’s time to celebrate the creative spirit within us all. A time to look, to see and notice the beauty of clay once artists get their hands on it. It is a feast for the eyes.
The Thompson Valley Potters’ Guild is serving up something special this spring. They have been preparing a feast of pottery that will be on display in the Kamloops Arts Council Main Gallery at the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre in Kamloops for the month of May.
“Feast for the Eyes” is an exhibit of functional dinnerware and serving pieces made by local ceramic artists. Some of the artists have chosen to show a full place setting – dinner plate, side plate, and a goblet or cup – while others have made service pieces such as a tea pot, pitcher, tray, or a centerpiece.
In addition to the functional wares we have included some pieces just for the eyes. Masks will be mounted on the walls surrounding the festivities below. The masks will represent guests or spectators adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
Thompson Valley Potters’ Guild
The TVPG is a non-profit community arts group dedicated to fostering excellence in pottery in the Kamloops area. We celebrate the unique works of local artisans, promoting craftsmanship in the exploration of functional and sculptural clay works.
The guild was created in October 1969 with only seven members. Now, 48 years later, we are still going strong. We meet monthly to learn and be inspired in our pottery practices. Members use a variety of clay bodies – stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware to produce functional and one-of-a-kind pieces. We also use many different firing techniques – electric, gas, raku, wood, pit firing and other atmospheric techniques.
