Strength In Being A Boy Conference

Registration Opens March 1st, 2017

Taking after its sister program, Power of Being a Girl, the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA is pleased to present the first annual Strength in Being a Boy Conference. Taking place on Wednesday, April 26th, 2017, the one-day conference will feature three workshops focusing on a variety of issues that impact the everyday lives of young boys. This event is offered at no cost to grades five, six, seven and eight, and will include a full day of fun and interactive workshops, start of the day and lunch time activities, and a great, healthy lunch provided by Uptown Chefs.

Each participant can choose two workshops from the following choices:

Dynamic Boy: Judo, the Gentle Way
(YMCA/YWCA Registration Codes: #14085/86)

Judo translates into the gentle way in Japanese. More focused on being assertive and using other people’s energy to support one’s own, the boys will cultivate alertness, concentration and self-confidence as well as the attitude of fair play and sportsmanship. This workshop will be presented by the Kamloops Judo Club, who have spent over sixty years providing a safe environment for the physical, mental and moral development of boys, girls, men and women of all ages.

Questing Boy: Navigating Challenging Situations
(YMCA/YWCA Registration Codes: #14087/88)

By exploring and finding the sword of truth, boys will search for the answers to the things we all want to know, but do not know where to start. In a group workshop setting, the participants will decorate wooden swords whilst finding answers and discovering truth.

Unmasked Boy: Exploring Boy Culture
(YMCA/YWCA Registration Codes: #14089/90)

The participants will be given the opportunity to discuss current and pressing issues facing young boys, through exploring numerous societal pressures to “act like a man” and by examining and challenging gender stereotypes. By recognizing “what makes you, you”, these conversations will be facilitated with a combination of verbal discussions as well as asking the participants to embody their Lego Master Builders from within and a lot of laughs.

Register opens for this event on March 1st, 2017, with an inclusive, limited amount of sixty spaces. Running from 8:30am to 3:00pm at the Tournament Capital Centre, participants are encouraged to register early to ensure a space in this educational, fun filled day. All interested participants can register through the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA at (250)-372-7725 or at (250)-554-9622.
