A Game of Thrones-inspired cocktail makes bartender Karl O’Dwyer a repeat winner.
The bartender from Globe restaurant at Big White Ski Resort last year won the People’s Choice Award at the Okanagan Spirits Winetender’s Mixoff with a Summerhill Pyramid Winery riesling and liqueur drink infused with rosemary and thyme called Only Thyme Will Tell.
On Thursday night (Oct 20), he again wowed a sell-out crowd of 200 at the Laurel Packinghouse to win the People’s Choice Award for the second year in a row.
His cold mulled wine concoction again used a Summerhill wine, this time a merlot, mixed with Okanagan Spirits blueberry liqueur and a splash of winter spice syrup.
O’Dwyer named the drink Winter is Coming after the oft-quoted line from the hit TV show Game of Thrones.
It was an evening of defending titles as Social 242 chef Jordan Wilton won best bite for his mini prime rib stuffed yorkies.
Last year, his Moroccan-style braised pork was tops.
The Judge’s Choice for best cocktail went to bartender Mark Veriker of BNA Brewing & Eatery for his creation, Planet of the Grapes.
He combined riesling from Kelowna’s Kitsch Winery with some Okanagan Spirits vodka and Spirits Eau de Vie, sherry, banana syrup and root beer extract.
The winetender mixoff event morphed out of the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival to highlight ways to use wine in a mixed drink.
