Kamloops Arts Council Presents Two Distinct Exhibits

Old Courthouse July 13 - August 6

The Kamloops Arts Council will feature two artists at the Old Courthouse from July 13 to August 6.

Una Connor’s Eclectic Eccentric: Interesting and interactive art displays, created by Una over time, promise to be exciting and stimulating. This exhibition will be hosted in the KAC Main Gallery at the Old Courthouse.

“Our entire human existence revolves around time,” says Una. “I often resist the concept of time, entering my studio where time ceases to exist, happily distracted by the mosaic of creativity, only to be constantly aware of a deadline… time always finds me.”

Una’s work includes paintings, drawings, collage and print making, photography and photo edits, sculpture and assemblage, as well as jewelry and costume accessories. Una Connor has resided in Kamloops for 11 years with her husband, two teens and two cats. Life’s adventures and a fascination for creation have paved the road to her becoming a self-disciplined multi-media artist. She has volunteered supporting arts in the community, worked with the KAC as an art instructor, participating in many art shows and festivals over the decade. This will be her second solo show with KAC.

Monica McGarry’s Discard Piles is a collection of engaging collages. Her exhibition will be hosted in the Hallway Gallery at the Old Courthouse.

“Discard Piles refers to the piles we amass in our lives,” says Monica. “The collages are assembled from images found in obsolete books. These pictures create nostalgic colours and patterns which serve to remind us of our attachment to memories and material possessions. The act of collage with discarded books asks us to examine society’s need to consume and collect… But also demonstrates how these antiquated materials can be transformed into something new.”

Monica McGarry is a multidisciplinary artist and art educator from Kamloops. She studied visual art, theatre and art education at the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia. Monica has worked as an art educator for the Kamloops School District, the Kamloops Art Gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery, as well as the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
Monica’s work has been displayed at various venues throughout the province. Her most recent video and sculptural installation will be exhibited at the Kamloops Art Gallery in the fall of 2016.
An Opening Reception for both exhibitions will be held Friday, July 15 from 5-7pm. All are Welcome!
