R.J. Haney Heritage Village & Museum is celebrating Pioneer Day on Sunday July 10 from 8:30 am – 2:00 pm. It’s a pioneer outing for the whole family! Enjoy games, the 7th annual pie eating contest, wagon rides, pioneer demonstrations, musical entertainment, and more. Gate admission is adults $6.00, children 5-13 $4.00, children under 4 are free.
Join the celebration and explore Salmon Arm’s rich history! Start your day at the outdoor kitchen with a delicious pioneer pancake breakfast for $6.00. Then enjoy a BBQ lunch with all the fixings from $5.50. Popcorn and ice cream will all be available. Marjorie’s Tea Room will be serving a lunch special for $7.99.
Performing this year is local country duo Vicki and John. They will have you singing along and tapping your toes to your favourite old time country songs. Salmon Arm’s own, gospel country singer song writer Abe Zacharias will also be performing on the stage at Pioneer Day.
The“7th Annual Pie Eating Contest” is calling all pie eaters! This crowd cheering competition is sponsored by the Shuswap Pie Company. Past competitors say this is lip smacking fun! Registration is free and can be done by calling the Village at 250-832-5243 or at Pioneer Day.
Visit the Kid’s Corner, where children can make a special pioneer craft, colour and have their face painted. The whole family will enjoy the old fashioned midway where you can play games of chance and skill to win prizes. Then explore the Village on a special pioneer scavenger hunt. Children can enter the cupcake eating contest and compete for this year’s title and prize. Join the sack races, learn to walk on stilts and visit Chelsey with her goat petting zoo.
Pioneer Day is your last chance to purchase tickets on the hand appliquéd quilt valued at $1800.00 Tickets are $2.00 each and the will draw will be at 1:30pm. Proceeds will be used to furnish Miss Puff’s Dress Shop and Millinery in the new Montebello Block currently under construction at the Village.
Come dressed in your best vintage garb and enter the costume contest. The vintage costume contest is open to all ages for a chance to win a prize. Resister and have your picture taken before 12:30pm for judging. A costume parade and awards will follow the raffle quilt draw.
While at Pioneer Day, take a tour the Haney House, the gem of R.J. Haney Heritage Village. Constructed in 1910, it is a hybrid of a practical farmhouse with touches of added gentility. Come and admire Mrs. Haney’s kitchen renovation and discover how pioneers lived in 1910.
The Shuswap Pioneer Collectors Club will be offering wagon rides and will have displays throughout the Village. These collectors enjoy preserving and sharing the rich history of the Shuswap pioneers. They bring back fond memories for those who experienced this history and ignit interest in younger generations.
Stroll the Village and enjoy displays and demonstrations by the Shuswap Spinners and Weavers, the Shuswap Quilters Quild, the Shuswap Needle Arts Guild, and Linda Bexton with her treadle sewing machine. Visit Jack Stead, his pioneer gun collection, and shooting gallery. Then visit Mr. Newnes apprentice blacksmith who will be busy in the Blacksmith Shop and much more.
