Real Grass! Real Baseball! Real Fun!
It’s been called a diamond in the rough; the finest invitational tournament in North America; a Canadian Classic.
The Grand Forks International (GFI) in Grand Forks, the heart of BC’s Boundary Country will celebrate its 35th Anniversary this summer. June 28-July 3 are the dates. A few years ago a team from Los Angeles participated in their first GFI. They wrote afterwards about their Grand Forks experience, “it was a baseball player’s dream come true.”
Players from afar have echoed similar sentiments describing it as “a world class event with great baseball in a great town.” Stephane Dupont from Montreal (an international umpire, including the Pan Am Games) was part of the umpiring crew at the Grand Forks tourney and commented, “I would sooner be in Grand Forks!”
The 12 teams for the 2016 GFI have been announced, four of them making their first trip to this southern interior border town. They include the 2015 Stan Musial World Series champions from Houston, Texas – the Westchase Express, and the San Francisco Seals. The 2015 National Baseball Congress and reigning GFI champions, Seattle Studs, are back. 2015 Canadian Bronze Medalists, Kamloops Sun Devils, are part of the Canadian contingent.
37 players from this tournament have gone on to play in the Major Leagues incl. Larry Walker, John Olerud, Tim Lincecum and Josh Beckett.
All game are played at beautiful James Donaldson Park. On site are the Hard Ball Cafe, the Right Field Tavern, a Family Friendly Zone and the GFI Hall of Fame. And adding to the fun Free Bingo is played during every game! Watch and play in the sun or under the lights.
