The host Big White Ski Club took advantage of an outstanding course on its home mountain to send several members to the podium during the weekend at the Matrix Western Canada Ski X Series.
Kiera Swift, 10, led the way by living up to her surname with first- and second-place finishes in the U12 girls’ division, while teammate Shayna Little earned a third place on the weekend at Big White Ski Resort.
The U12 boys’ event saw Gavin Krebbers of Big White race to second place, while Benjamin Hare claimed a pair of bronze medals. Johnny Ekinci just missed making it to the podium, placing fourth and sixth in his races. Jordie Plaxton finished sixth and seventh. Finley Cashin skied to seventh on opening day, while making a huge comeback to earn a silver medal on Sunday.
Hallie Jenkins of the BWSC claimed a third-place finish on both days in the U14 girls’ competition, while Jenelle Giebelhaus was seventh on Saturday.
In the boys’ U14 event, Adam Fricska glided to fourth and sixth place and fellow Big White racer, Luke McMillan, placed sixth on Sunday.
Saturday’s U16 girls’ race saw Cara Shaw ski to fourth place on Saturday, while Quinn Rasmussen took second and fifth in the boys’ U16 events. RJ Lukinuk earned a sixth-place finish on Sunday.
Seventy-five athletes from throughout B.C., Alberta and Washington state took part in the three-day event — the first stop in a three-part series in Western Canada for skiers U12 to U16.
Racing began on Saturday, with mother nature blanketing the track with falling snow. But conditions remained solid and held up with help from the local course crew.
Sunday was a perfect bluebird race day, resulting in even more competitive racing for all ages.
Up next is the Matrix Western Ski X Series at Lake Louise Feb. 26-28.
