New gladed terrain and 128 runs open to skiers and boarders
Vernon, BC – December 11, 2015 – SilverStar Mountain Resort is dropping the rope on Putnam Creek at 8:45 a.m. tomorrow. Signalling the move from early season to full-on winter mode, the annual Putnam Creek opening is a highly anticipated event at the resort.
Each year a group of dedicated skiers and boarders eagerly wait at the Putnam gate to be the first to take on a bonanza of steep and deep runs found in the 1,900 acre area. Typically the last of SilverStar’s four mountain faces to open for the season, Putnam Creek features mostly challenging expert terrain, favoured and savoured by skiers and riders seeking an adrenaline rush.
“The 70 cm snowfall we’ve had over the past week has been perfect for the opening,” said Brad Baker, operations director for SilverStar. “Last weekend’s snow was heavier than usual, which has created a solid base, making the groomed runs exceptional.”
“Since last weekend, temperatures have dropped and the snow has been falling. This new snow is going to give skiers and boarders lots of choices. They’ll find untouched virgin powder as well as winch-groomed blacks with a fresh coat of 5 cm of powder on top. It’s going to be great skiing.”
“As an additional bonus, this season’s cumulative snowfall of 299 cm, the most we’ve seen in years, is allowing us to open our new tree skiing earlier than expected,” continued Baker. “We gladed over 100 acres in the fall and now we have sufficient snow coverage to allow skiers and boarders to enjoy this new terrain.”
The new glades are comprised of more than 80 acres of intermediate-level terrain in Silver Woods and over 20 acres at the expert-level on in Putnam Creek.
For skiers and boarders who want to be the first to take on Putnam Creek, the Powder Gulch chair and the Home Run tee start spinning at 8:45 on Saturday. There will be a total of 128 runs open this weekend, including all Putnam runs except Alder Point.
Other resort openings this weekend include Paradise Camp, the restaurant located at the top of Powder Gulch, which opens for the season at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
For skating enthusiasts, Brewer’s Pond has been cleared and prepared. If temperatures continue on the cool side, the pond will open to hockey players and figure skaters on Saturday. Unlimited access to all seven My1Pass winter activities is now available for the season, including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, skating, fat biking, snowshoeing and Nordic skiing.
